I'm getting a hard shudder in my 2002 Automatic 7.3L. It only occurs when I get to about 40mph and lasts through 60mph. It also goes away as soon as I let off the gas. If I floor it it will pass right through 40 and 60 without any shuddering.
Now I figure it was the torque converter going out but when I apply the brake while giving it gas around 45 the shuddering is still there which should mean its not an issue with lockup.
Sounds like my problem exactly. But...mine goes away after a 15 minute 'warm up' drive. Mine also idles rough when it is like this. After warm up and the shuddering goes away...idle is also back to normal and continues that way as long as I'm driving it. Let it sit for a few hours...repeat same.
So...I would be 100% sure it was a TC/tranny issue (feels like it)....IF I weren't 100% sure it was engine related. In my case (and I suspect yours) it is engine related. My problem started the very day I had 4 injectors replaced. Since then I have replaced under valve cover wiring harnesses, gaskets, glow plugs and a sensor or two.....folks here say that I still have an injector issue or an injector installation issue....and I'm starting to believe the same. I hope you find your problem (and mine). I'll check back on this thread to find your solution. Please post.
Mine isn't an RPM issue and is constant. My idle isn't rough. I don't believe mine is engine related. In fact it almost seems like it is impossible to be engine. It is a vibration in the steering wheel in 3rd and O/D at a specific speed.
if its at the same speed might be you wheel balance. cause TC would cause it to do it in all the gears,
did you try throwing it in neutral at the same speed?
might be a career bering too for driveshaft too. whats config of your truck LB,CC,EC?
let us know a little more....
lots of guys here had the problem with the bering, maybe somone will chime in who had the problem, but i would go under and see if its loose or somthing, or if it has play... but my money is on the bering...
What happens if you put it in neutral? Also try holding foot on brake from a stop, then slowly push the accelerator to put a bit of load on the engine and see if you get a vibration. I'd also check the hub/bearing assemblies on both sides. Does it only happen in a straight line or does it also vibrate when going around a curve? If it was tranny vibration, you'd feel it more in the seat and floor than the steering wheel. I had a vibration at 60-65 and then I also noticed it at 20-25 in a lower gear slightly and it was one bad injector. It idled fine and under hard throttle it was fine, but at a slight load under the right circumstances it would fail to operate properly.
Going in a straight line or around a curve has no effect. It doesn't just occur in one gear. It occurs in every gear at 45-55mph, it builds up and peaks at 50mph.
I agree with Austin on the vibration feel. Mine gets so bad that the steering wheel feels like it might come off....cups in the cup holders rattle like crazy etc...not really an under the seat type of vibration. The vibration only occurs in last gear and TC lockup and increases in conjunciton with the go-pedal.
Again...I'm 99% sure mine is engine/injector related and stops doing it completely after about 15 minutes of driving.
I think mine might be a miss. One of the injectors may not be working. We played with it alot tonight. Definitely engine or torque converter related but doesn't have alot of the typical TC symptoms but still hasn't been ruled out.
It also has a rough idle as well not horribly bad but it is a little rough, and it seems a little sluggish off the line.
