Transmisson Questions

Transmission Conditon
70-80 K miles,
Last time changed fluid, it was very burnt smelling.

Probably stupidly, I added a big TS performance chip 80+hp
Torque converter slips when i get over 75% throttle in 100Hp mode.
Stock mode, I can run it flat out and no promblem at all.

I'm looking at a stage four 690.00 buck torque converter, says its good to 1000lb/ft.

I know the junk coming off the TC clutchs isnt good and needs to be replaced too

Question 1.

If I replace the torque converter, how much and how long will my tranny put up with the extra power being transmitted to it?

If I have the transmission out, should i do any flushing or anything like that to clean it out?

Would a valve body help any?

Should I have the clutches replaced?

lol sorry guys for all the Q's, I just can't afford a 2-3k transmission, especially for a $6-7K truck

If you've got burnt fluid & clutch material in your pan, it's probably not from the TC. The clutches are in the tranny case itself and when those go, it's time for a complete rebuild. The TC is just sort of like a couple fans blowing into each other, so I'm thinking a good torque converter will just send your already weak tranny right over the edge.

I would go ahead and get a completely fresh rebuild, or go to one of the masters at BTS (central US), Suncoast (southeast US), or John Wood (west coast) depending on where you are in the country. Just MHO...

Only my opnion but if your doing all that you may want to consider a rebuild. reason I say that the mechanicle diode just let go on my 250 and cost me 1450.00 to rebuild. I did a new torque converter and a tugger kit besides the other stuff needed to get her on the road. Something to consider.

The more I read about transmission problems here at FTE, the more pissed off I get at Ford. Why in the Hell would they put what really amounts to no more that junk behind this great engine? I'm on my second budget minded rebuild and I most likely will not live long enough to have to do another. Sticks are for race cars and Corvette's which in my youth I owned too many of. Ford should recall all of these damn 4R100's and take their lumps.

If you find that wreck with a ZF grab the PCM to, you might want it. Don't know what kinds of codes your own PCM will throw not having the auto to talk to.
