I have a 2002 F250 RCLB with the 7.3 and the 4R100 auto and 170k, 4" MBRP and K&N cold air.Trans shifts fine good and hard no noise. but I've been running it on tow mode with my edge ( soon to be replaced with a TS6, if it ever gets here 😡 everybody says the torque converters are the first thing to **** the bed idk if that's on the 2001s that seems to be the bad year. And if I run the TS6 on #6 ( 140hp 280tq added ) so I'd be making 390hp and almost 850ft lb of torque. Question is would it even be worth it to replace the stock converter with a triple disk or just run it how it is. Just wondering if it's even worth the $$$ to upgrade it.
First of all once you get your TS6 if I were you I would not make plans to even try running the 140hp because to begin with you aren't going to get 140hp since you do not have supporting modds. It will actually probably won't run much different than the 100hp tune if not worse. Two you will stressing things like trans , t.c. rear diff. Now I am basing these off of what others have said. But I am sure guys that are running the TS6 will have more to say on that subject.
Now as far as your trans and t.c. goes I would say if it stock and isn't broken don't waste time or money just replacing the t.c. Yes the t.c. is a weak link but actually the whole 4R100 from the factory has many weak links also. So if you tow heavy and plan on using a hp tune I would say start with a EGT & trans temp gauge and keep a close eye on these 2 things. Also just start saving your money $$ up for a BTS or JW trans and don't put any money into the trans or t.c. other than fuild changes. Because with 170k on the trans and the fact you tow heavy your tranny days are numbered. And since you plan on playing with hp tunes the trans could go out before the t.c. So if you put a nice t.c. in an old trans when the trans goes it will take out your new t.c. So from my experience I would say with 170k I would try NOT to beat on it and be as kind as you can until you get a BTS or JW trans in it. After that, have at it because you won't be able to hurt either of them trans & t.c. combos.
** Once again I can not stress enough start with EGT & trans temp gauges and keep an eye on things.**
I believe Ed is correct. If you don't have any supporting mods, (injectors, extra air, bigger injectors, etc.) you are not going to see anywhere near 140 extra HP. Closer to 100-120 and running those hot tunes when towing heavy is a recipe for big problems. If you don't have at least the 2 gauges he mentions, you should not even think about towing in anything beyond a 60HP tow tune, and even then I would be concerned.
Guess I never said I tow I do seldomly but not everyday.i just run it in tow mode with my edge because it boost line pressure and makes it shift better.
