460/c6 using a newer high torque starter???

I have a 78 bronco with 460 and a c6 trans. I frequently find that even with a big battery, high cranking amps, that my original starter will barely spin my engine when it is warm. I thought it was a battery problem, bought a new battery not fixed. I thought it was a starter problem a new starter helped a bit but not very much. I recently heard that the 460's in the 92-97 ??? was a high torque starter. I am wondering if any one has put one on a c6 motor or if they will even bolt up. If so what year to get and what trans was used to get a part number? Thanks for any info, it will be very helpfull>

Couple of things, how much compression in the beast? If your not above 10 to 1, shouldn't have any problems with the stock starter. How about the solenoid on the fender, might be going bad and not putting the amps down to the starter or the wiring to/from the same. Sometimes if the timing is advanced to far, this can cause a hot start problem (doesn't sound like your problem though). If I think of anything else, I'll post for you.

i agree, a stock starter should be just fine for your app. sounds like somthing else than the starter. unless your using a very high comp. ratio like he said. i use a stock one on my 77 f-150 with a 9:6.1 comp. motor. don't have any problems at all, starter spins fast and starts right up. If you have HEADDERS on the 460, you are going to
need to wrap the starter with a heat absorbent starter wrap.
places like SUMMIT RACING, JEGS, etc...
sell them about $21.00.

I agree with Dre. It sounds to me like you need to wrap your starter. It sounds like the start is getting hot and not allowing it to spin as freely. I would try the starter wrap first, and if that doesn't fix it then I would try the high torque starter. Good luck.

headers should have nothing to do with it. i'm using a set on mine and have no trouble. but this is my set-up and my opinion. later........ C.J.

I have headers but they are l&l fender well exit. The wiring is brand new and I used thick 2 ga. for ground, positive to solinoid, and from solonoid to the starter. wiring shouldn't be the problem. I haven't replaced the solonoid but I rolls the motor fine when it's cold. again the only time it does this is when it's hot. I retard the timing and it starts a little better but then it runs like $#!T. I really can't figure it out, as for compression it is just a hair above stock.

Hey bb....I know you probably don't want to hear this ....but...It is possible to get a bad remanufactered starter...I have seen starters that were drawing too many amps have hot start problems.

The other thing, as stated above would be to try some kind of heat shield.

good luck

460/c6 using a newer high torque starter???

I think that i am going to get a new starter. the one i got is a Auto Zone 39.99 special. I dont think heat rap will help because i have fender exit headers and they are about a foot from the starter. One guy said to try changing the solonoid. I should try that too. it just seems like when she gets up to about 200-220 degrees the starter wont even roll it over. If you turn the key back and forth ingaging and disingaging the starter after a few seconds it will spin over fine, then if it dont start, the motor will lug the starter down and roll over real slow. ru ru ru ru ru. don't mind my little antics it is the exact noise the truck makes when it is hot. Any way i still would like to try to put a starter from a newer 460 in because I was told they would fit and that they were infact higher in torque output than an ordinary starter. thanks a lot 4 the input on this subject. I really enjoy this site it is informing and entertaining. Check out 460 vs 400 m in the 385 series board on this site you will see a lot of guys arguing over two worthy apponants. both motors have their pros and cons, I enjoy it a lot. thanks josh....

You'd be happier with one of those new high-torque gear reduction starters like you can buy in jegs and Summit. I installed one on my 83 f150, 514, and it really does make a BIG difference in the way it starts. These type starters generally use a hitatchi or nippondenso motor, meaning that they draw a lot less amps to let the ignition system have more power to make it MUCH easier to start. Just my $.02

Do you by chance remember how much that gear reduction starter cost? Thanks.
