Another question about the 460. Is the ticking sound normal? I have heard that all the electronic ignitions make that sound. I just put in a new engine and it has 2000 miles on it. I don't remember the sound at first. My fear comes from the last engine I had that blew a rod when the ticking turned into clacking. It is a 1984 and who knows how many miles that engine had on it but I really don't want to go through that again.
I suggest you check for leaks around your exhaust manifolds or where your tailpipe bolts up. On my 460 the exhaust manifold bolts keep working loose whenever I run the engine hot (as in pulling my trailer). Maybe that's your problem too??
I had the same problem with a 514, the sound was coming from the header flange gaskets. Unlike most engines where the gasket is symmetrical (installs either way), these engine's manifold gaskets can only be installed one way. If you put 'em on backwards (like I did) they will be misaligned, only about a 16th of an inch, but just enough to create a "ticking" sound. Just my $.02
