windshield and rear window problems
windshield and rear window problems
Just wondering how many of you guys have had issues with installation of windshields or rear windows. I am having a local glass shop install a sliding rear window and windshield on my 77 F250 and the technician who is doing the work is an experienced 17 year tech and had some problems with the both glass. The rear window is a CLR laurence slider which he installed, but he said it was very tight and barely was able to get the chrome locking strip in and the windshield he had was too big by about 1/4 inch so he is going to have to shave some off or try to get a different part number windshield. He said he has ran into this before, that the newer glass is not being made as accurate today than of old so we run into problems like this. I have all the confindence of the tech who is doing the work. He takes his time and is very careful of the truck. Just another issue to deal with. 1 of many frustrations when you get into rebuilding these old trucks.
I was warned not to buy the weather seals with the center chrome lock strips because they were supposed to be a real PITA, so I bought the plain rubber ones for my truck. I am going to install them this weekend, but my rear glass is the original non-slider and the front windshield is not the original, but is a Used Ford windshield. I already installed the rear window once, but I had to take it out to repaint around the window channel. The rear glass went in just fine, but it did take some coaxing with the palm of my hand and some hard pulling of the cloths-line cord I used to install it. Definitely a two person job though.
Well, the tech just finished up the job. He had to shave some off of the windshield and it fit. That gasket seemed to fit fine, but putting in the chrome locking strip and corners was a pain he said. I'm glad I didn't try doing it myself. Well worth the money to have someone else do it. The chrome strip does look real nice front and back. Just seems really crappy that he had to shave the windshield down. I'm also glad I had an experienced tech and not someone new who would have probably butchered it. Maybe alot had to do with the gasket and not the windshield...I don't know. But he said this is the second time he has run into this problem.
Wow, I will try to install my solid rear window in a few days when the rubber comes in. I sure hope it goes smooth for me and my friend. It won't have the chrome strip so maybe it will go a bit easier.
I always ask for a Tinted , shaded carlite replacement windshield.
Never any fitment problems
Glass these days is crappy anyway ..they are so prone for getting little chips in them from light road sand that doesn't get picked up by street cleaners
