I'm having trouble with my excursion starting. This has only happened on four different occasions, but has stranded me each time. The truck will usually start after ten minutes of trying to start it. I have had the truck in the shop each time and they can find no problem with anything. This is driving me crazy and I'm ready to sell the truck. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
I'd start by checking your battery cables (both ends) for corrosion. A weak battery will turn the engine at a speed that sounds fast enough but it's really not.
First off, it's a SUV, not a truck....hahaha just kidding. Is it really cold where you live? Better question would be, was it really cold the four times it wouldn't start?
Usually after the truck has run for 20 minutes or so the glow plug light will stay on for about 6-10 seconds. When I was out east last summer the light would take a second to turn off. I thought this might be because of the humidity vs. colorado's dry climate.

That's a good assumption. The light is just an indicator controlled by the PCM based upon sensor readings. It's not actually related to the glow plugs being on or off. A funny acting light will sometimes give you a hint of where to look for other issues.
A shop that can't figure it out either means they know nothing about diesels, or more commonly there are no codes in the computer and they can't duplicate the problem. That's why I suggested the cables. They don't always leave a code and it's easy to forget to check the other ends.
I second that notion. Have them check your cam position sensor. If the problem is intermitten, I would lean towads a chafing wire. When was the last time you checked your fuel filters?
Changed every 15K on the money, I beleive I just changed them 5K ago. The cam sensor was changed the first time the problem arose and it seemed to work for maybe 5k miles, but still have the same problem.
first off, what year is your truck? Is the truck cold like your just trying to start it the first time in the morning when you have the problem,. Or is it after youve been driving it for a while and the truck is fully warm? If you have an 05 or newer and this is happening after youve been driving the truck and its warm, its the hpop fitting. take it in and get the new updated fitting.
