im in the process of building a 460 for my 79 f-250, my question is what cam would yall recomend, im going to use a performer intake, 71 429 heads with mild porting and cleaning up and 10:1 compression, what cam would yall recomend for a good heavy towing motor that puts out lots of torqe around 2500-3000 rpm, would yall recomend any more mods? would roller rockers be worth it? i am keeping my stock manifolds, thnx, oh what kinda power numbers could i expect?

well, if i were you id use the performer rpm, the performer is more like a stock piece just aluminum. but as for a good cam, ford motorsport makes a few good grinds for the 460, and since you say you wanna be towing, i would use part number M-6250-A460, 216/220 degrees @ .050. thats what cam i have(dont have the motor together yet). and as for compression, would lower it a tad if i were you with iron heads, 10:1 may be a little much for pump gas. definately go with the roller rockers though. i think they are well worth the extra money(harland sharp make a good roller from what i hear and they are the most reasonable i think). car craft(maybe hot rod, cant remember, ill try to find the article tonight and get back to ya) made a 8.8:1(stock bottom end from a later 70's motor, roller rockers) motor with a cam similar to the cam i gave you and a performer rpm intake and 850 cfm carb that made 431 hp and 497 lb/ft, with over 400 lb ft through the entire powerband. good luck and i hope this helps,
mike
Yeah, 10:1 is a lil high for pump gas, and the extra $ for premium... welll, it's up to you.
Just to give you an Idea, here's my setup.
Im running a SSI cam from PAW mail-order, 218/228@.050 with .509/.509 lift. In my nearly stock 460 (port/polished/3 angle valve/polished valve/lapped seats/stock rocker arms&springs; Mallory ignition; roller timing chain; Warlock exhaust with stock manifolds)Im running nearly 400 horsepower, and nearly 500 foot-pounds, with over 420lb.ft. from Idle to 4500rpm.
You can do it, too! Stick with a cam thats under 218/228 at .050, and try to get one with a longer duration on the exhaust. Invest in true roller timing chain. Find a good ignition system.. MSD is good, Mallory is better. Stock manifolds are fine(good for torque)but be sure to back it with a free-flowing exhaust system (flowmaster, Dynomax, etc.)
Good luck!
