im just inquiring if anyone here would have a source on 65+ tranny 3spd column that was hooked to a I6. I have plans to put it in my 53 f100 and im having a heck of a time finding one. Any help would be appreciated. Preferrably in Canada
Came across this one on ebay, seems kinda pricey if you ask me. Not familiar with suspension, or sheet metal that is involve with the modification you are considering. For some of those who go with the power steering upgrade for the 61-66, an option is to go to later model column because the steering column is shorter and don't need to deal with shorting original column. Anyhow, food for thought.
thanks for the links. They wont work they have to be from an inline 6 as the input shafts are longer on them than on larger motors. Withthe longer input shaft i can direct bolt it to my flathead otherwise i need to buy an expensive adapter
I'm a little surprised you are having trouble finding a 3 speed column tranny that was on a straight six. They are by far the most common around Minnesota / North Dakota. Maybe when they go into your local junkyards they are scrapped for the metal. Not very many people are looking for that trans.
Possibly consider buying a complete 6 cylinder pickup, pulling the trans and selling the rest. It shouldn't cost you too terribly much, and someone who wants a V8 with a different trans shouldn't care that the 3 speed trans is gone. Also, you'll be able to make sure the trans is in good working order. I would think that it may be difficult to find replacement parts for the tranny, so making sure it shifts well should be important to you.
i was talking to my antique parts dealer who did the swap on his son's 53 and he told me only the truck boxes late 64- 72 work as long as it was hooked up to an I6 and was 3 spd column shift. I got a bead on a 72 so i should be in good shape. thanks everyone
A V8 or I6 column is the same for a three speed manual, the PS column is 1 1/2" shorter and a lot harder to find.
A earlier column from a 61 or 64 will do the trick also and reuse the shaft from the effie with modifications.
There is no such animal as a late 64 steering box. all 61 to 64 straight axle trucks use the integral box and shaft like the Effie. 65 trucks with the switch to twin i beams dictated the new ford box for manual steering and a bendix box for power steering. The latter being longer due to the PS hardware.
Addendum: A 65 to 72 box will not work in a straight axle truck like the effie your parts guy is not correct in his assessment. The ford, bendix or ford PS boxes are bottom steer with center link type where the effie and trucks up to 64 are side steer with drag link. I have seen a later 70s box installed in a 64 with lots of torched custom bent tie rods and other scary components.
