so, i read on here and heard thru the grapevine that if i put a head off of a 240 on my 300, that'll bump up my compression, but where the heck do i find one of these, most people i talk to about it have heard of this technique and heard of the engines, but don't kno where to find them...i tried looking thru evilbay and in the local junk yards but nothin nowhere...anyone out there kno something i don't?
Here I was coming to this forum to post something about cc's on a 300 head and this looks like just the subject for it. I was home from work today and killing time on the internet and tried to find the the cc's on a 300 head. I am building a 460 for my pulling truck and it seems easy enough to find those numbers, but I couldn't seem to dig up anything on the 300 head.
Now I have heard the same thing as you Snowman and I believe it's b/c of the smaller cc's on the 240 head, another thing I heard is that the 240 head is also more restrictive in flow then the 300. So if someone could find the cc's on both these heads we could figure up the compression ratio on both and see how much of a difference it really makes.
well hello there cowboy, been meaning to email u, but haven't had anything worth sendin u...haven't been around that engine to get any numbers off of it, but as soon as i do, u'll be the first to kno! but ya, as they say, great minds think alike!
Ahhh, like I said, no hurry, no use going out in this weather. When I take the 460 to the machine shop maybe I'll ask my guy if I can borrow his cumbustion chamber volume checker (can't think of the proper name) and check my old head off my 300 (one of the chambers that doesn't leak) my old head had hairline spilts all the way through the valve seats and a 1/4" more in 2 cyl.
You can also use the 4.9 EFI head. It has a small chamber like the 240, but the flow is not reduced. You will need to recurve your distributor to make it work right. The EFI head should be much easier to find than the 240.
No, I don't. I will probably have chamber and port volumes on the EFI in the near future. I might have an old carb 300 head laying around that I could also check.
can i still use my carb setup w/ the EFI head or do i need to switch to a complete EFI setup and if yes, then that would mean getting an engine computer among other things?
The carb stuff should all bolt on to the EFI head. The EFI head doesn't have as many manifold bolt holes as the carb head, but I doubt that will hurt it and it shouldn't be any big deal.
