Just got back from an auction and made off with a box full of old electronics; about a dozen CB's, some old cable boxes, PA's, other junk like that... Anyway, in the bottom of the box was one of those old Fuzzbuster radar detectors from the 70's.... Will it still work? Or has the technology changed?
I did plug it in, it turns on, I drove around, but couldn't find any cops to test it on, lol...
I doubt it will pick up laser, but I have no idea. Laser is what a lot of police use these days because it allows them to "instant on" and get a reading of your vehicle, rather than leaving the radar on to get your speed.
Works for just about everything I have come across so far. Purchased in the 80's. Mainly use my detector just to know smokey is out there somewhere and not to run at excessive speed all the time.
in the 80's the primary radar was x-band, then came k-band, then came ka-band, then laser.
The model you speak of would probably do just fine x-band, and maybe k, but I doubt it. I would be very suprised if it could pick up ka and certainly not laser.
The good news is that with the x-band, you'll be totally protected from those pesky night alarm systems in old stores and if K works, then you'll always know where the automatic sliding doors are in the stores (a form of k band is used to detect approaching customers, and thus open the doors).
I might be a little off base here, but I'll bet the majority of the info is accurate. If it were me and I wanted a radar detector, an 80's model Fuzzbuster wouldn't be my choice, but it should make one heck of a nostalgic paperweight.
It would probably work picking up the x band, but the range (or distance) at which you pick up signal would be very small. I will not pick up laser or other radar bands...Great piece of nostalgia though...
