brake electronics?

I just bought a 2000 expedition and while doing a spark plug change I looked down and noticed an electronic box with all the brake lines running up to it. The plug that connects into box is unplugged. Why would it be unplugged? Should I plug it back in and is that the reason my abs light is on?

I'd say that is a good reason for a ABS light... There should never be any unplugged connectors anywhere, specially big connectors. It might have been unplugged because it was having an issue, but the only way you'll find out is if you plug it back in and see what happens. If you still have a light, you might want to get the codes read at a dealer to see what's up.

It was likely unplugged by the PO because the ABS module was constantly cycling the valves and running down the battery. If you plug it in and the module IMMEDIATELY starts making noise, that will confirm it.

Ok, then it's probably bad and needs replacement. But you could bring it to a dealer and plug it in and read the codes, just to make sure. It might be the module itself, or it could be bad sensors that makes the module go crazy.

Do what I said (plug it in). If it fires off, the module is bad. No code reading is needed.

Yes and yes, since it's the only way to see what is and is not working. I'm sure once you plug it in you will find there is a problem with the ABS system. It could be the module or it could be a wheel sensor, tone ring, or wiring. It's all guesswork until you plug it in and see what happens.

If it was a sensor or tone ring, they wouldn't have unplugged it, they would have just ignored the light.

Except that a broken tone ring would cause the ABS thumping in the pedal every time the brakes were applied. It's easy to ignore a light, but not so easy to ignore a thumping brake pedal.
