Truck Missing?

Truck has developed a miss. I believe its on #8 because with a heat gun that cylinder is colder than the matching side. About 100 degrees colder. I have new injectors and glow plugs. The truck is an 01 with 190,000 miles. I am getting blue smoke puffing on start up and it gets better when warm but still a little bit of smoke and also drinking its share of oil about 1 quart every 800-1000 miles. Do you guys think its a broken ring or ?

Thanks

Try removing the oil cap and see if it "puffs" like an old steam engine.

New o-rings with the 'new injectors?'

Sounds very o-ringish to me.

All diesel engines have a good amount of blow by.
I made a video of my engine to illustrate what a correct amount of blow by is and that is needs to come out in a smooth stream.
When I ask you if your is "puffing" it is very important that you notice a "pulsing" in the smoke stream coming out of your oil cap.
If that is what you are seeing on your engine, then it's time to do a compression check to verify.

I found this on You Tube and it illustrates a good example of a diesel engine with a bad piston.
I didn't make it so if you want to laugh at the guy talking, it's not me!!!
But you can see the oil cap bouncing and when he removes it the smoke comes out in a "puffing" sort of way that indicates one cylinder has lost rings.

What are your plans for the truck?
Work?
Play?
Mix of both?
This is the time to decide what you want to do and lay your plans now.
Some of the worst engines made are the ones that are not thought out from the beginning and people hang power adders on as afterthoughts.
The best ones are the ones that are planned from the beginning.
Once that question is answered then there's several guys here on FTE that could guide you to a good source.

I do a lot of towing. I own a cattle farm and the truck is used primarly for farm use. I have a 24' trailer on it about 3/4 of the time. I have a DP tuner but other than that I want to keep it stock and just have a realiable work horse. I am going to fix the motor and at least put a long block in it because it has a new turbo, injectors and glow plugs. Any thought would be helpful.

I have rebuilt gassers in the past, is there any reason why you wouldn't want to just rebuild this. I assume diesels are as easy.
Not to mention, no compression could mean bad head gasket or valve seals. These should be easy enough to repair. (again assuming this part is the same as a gasser)

There is no difference in procedure to rebuild a diesel vs a gas engine. If you've done one, you can do the other, no sweat.
Everything is simply more robust inside of the diesel engine.

I love the comments below the video... The opinions range from "F'ed" to "needs a valve adjustment" to "It'll go forever like that".
