My temp gauge only goes up 1/3 of the way right now, it used to go half way all the time. It doesn't get that warm but enough to be livable and defrost things. I know that when I drive on the highway that the temp needle drops just a little and then raises back up a little when I come to a stop. My dad thinks the thermostat needs replaced, before I start replacing things or taking it to the dealership and getting hammered on $$ are we on the right track?
If so, how hard is it to replace a thermostat on a 2000 F150 with a 4.6L, are there any special tools that are needed and where is it? I've got about 72k on it right now.
It is not hard but first after you take it for a good drive and it "warms" up shut it off and see if you can keep your hand on the upper radiator hose. If it is too hot to keep your hand on the thermostat is either stuck open or working, if you can keep your hand on it the T-stat is stuck closed. The T-stat will require a socket and extension, I want to say 10mm socket. Just follow the upper radiator hose until it hits the engine and that is your T-stat housing. Since you'll need to drain a good portion of coolant to get it out I'd replace all the coolant and both radiator hoses. Also take not of which way the Stat is in you don't want to install it backwards. The brass part that sticks out should go towards the engine. You'll also want a new thermostat housing gasket when you replace it. The petcock for the radiator is at the bottom P. side and is the standard right hand thread, just loosen the part with the "wings" until coolant comes out.
Sounds more like you may be low on coolant. I would certainly check this first. I haven't changed a thermostat on one of these engines so, I can't be of much help on your other questions. It should be pretty easy to spot the thermostat housing and what is needed to replace it if needed. Good luck!
