Smile themostat issues

1975 F150 2 wheel wheel drive with a 390 4 barrel carburetor. Today I noticed the temperature gauge was close to high temperature mark. The upper radiator hose was still cold and so was the radiator. I thought the thermostat must be sticking so i replaced my 180 degree with a 192 degrees thermostat... Same thing ..temp guage was almost buried in hot zone.. upper radiator hose was still cold ..then i tested both thermostats they opened up when the water boiled. Then i ran it without the thermostat and it won't even get to the cold mark and won't blow any hot air . I was wondering if this could be a water pump issue or perhaps something I've overlooked?or maybe i need to spend a little more on a thermostat??

Usually when you remove the t.stat, the engine will run hotter because the coolant doesnt slow down enough to absorb the heat. Name brand thermostat should suit you ok. Gates, NAPA, etc. I would deff pull the pump and check that the impeller isnt rusted away. Ive seen this twice esp on engines that have a leak, and the customer just keeps adding water. Stick with the 180 deg thermostat rating.

You're not installing the t-stats backwards are you?

i wouldnt worry about the pump until last more or less because you said that WITHOUT a stat, it wont get warm(that would be normal) so its flowing. you said it blows heat? therefore heater core/hoses are not clogged which should not cause that drastic of an issue either really.

might be worth it to drain all your coolant(save it), fill her up with water and some flush chemical(like the $4 prestone stuff at the parts store) and commence a cooling system flush(probably without the t-stat installed, too) that way you might take care of any build ups. check to be sure the upper/lower radiator hoses are clear. we had a mouse clog an upper hose one time(???)

there is only one other thing i can think of is the bypass hose(that short hose between the water pump and intake) could be clogged up somehow which means youll be pulling the pump to replace that. this is all assuming that something isnt being done quite right when doing the thermostats?

installation...???

When i put the thermostat into the housing i noticed if i turn it it stops half way around..and when it stops,it pushes the thermostat so it isnt quite centered in the groove in the housing. Should i leave in that position, or keep it where it is centered? When i turn it till it stop, i can still pull it right out, it doesnt lock in there by any means...
Silly question???

The gasket holds the t-stat in place and the spring side goes towards the intake.

On the T stat itself, I've always had good luck with the "better" parts house type. Duralast or similar.

One possibility is you have an air pocket after changing the stat. Air under the stat. Sometimes a few cycles of heat and cooling will burp it out. Top off the coolant when cool.

I drill a 1/8th inch hole on the flange to eliminate that possibility.
