I've got close to 130k on my 01 F-250 and as far as I know all the u joints are stock except for the front axle shafts...did them when I did ball joints. Anyone know if I should replace these? I know the ones on the front were pretty close to being totally siezed. Everything seems to be fine with them but I keep thinking that maybe I should just change them out anyway after seeing what condition the fronts were in. Maybe I can squeeze out a few extra mpg?
I had to replace mine at 90k on my '02. BUT not because any of the three u-joints in the back went bad... It was the needle bearings in the double-carden joint at the transfer case yoke that went south. Causing one hell of a vibration!
Replace them if they are "totally siezed." There are a lot of factors that affect how many miles you get out of a set of U-joints, so just replace them when they start causing problems or making noise.
LOL well I suppose that should be obvious redford...I'm just saying that before I did the u-joints on the axle I didn't have any noise or vibration problems. Seeing how they are all the same age and the driveshaft u-joints get a hell of a lot more wear I might be smart to do it.

Traded my '99 with 166,000 on it with all original u-joints ,except for the axle joints still in it.

my rear double carbon failed at around 75000, i chaged the front shaft ones around 80000(they were still good just a precautionary) the front axel joint were changed when the shafts were change around 60000 both were good but sinse i was changing my stubs might as well change the joints. u joint life depends on many factors load on them(tow heavy load, heay payload, lots of offroad, alot of water and mud running. my rear went mostly due to offroading and loads.
U-joints are fine. Replace both front hubs at about 90,000 . And I just found out tonight that I can service . I have 160,000 miles on my F350 7.3 diesel that I bought in 2000. I carry a 16 foot trailer.. , and also I have a 25 foot boat , which is very heavy. And I have not heard a squeak out of the joints.
