Its time for us to replace our 2000 Windstar. DW informs me she is tired and bored with the minivans we have been driving for the past 10 years. She wants an SUV and being a Ford guy I am partial to the Mountaineer or Explorer. I know nothing about these vehicles but after visiting the forum I'm hesistant due to all the negative posts about the AWD & tranny's in these vehicles. I am looking at 2002 thru 2005 model Explorers & Mountaineers. If I get one it will be the 4.0 V6. I value the advice and expertise on this forum- ARE THESE VEHICLES WORTH THE MONEY????

If I was going to look at one. I would look at '05 and newer. I have an '04 and as soon as the warranty gets close to running out, it is GONE!.
If you do look at an '02 - '05, all I can say is do a little research on the things to look for and check it VERY CLOSE. Not all of them are bad, there have been serveral people on here that have got good ones. Good Luck with your search.

I just bought an 02 Exolorer XLT. Needed a new Transfer Case put in (which is rare to go), but while that was being done the mechanic drained the tranny and took a look at it...all seemed good with the tranny by him. There have been several complaints especially on the 02 models...but when have you heard people making a post saying:

"WOW my explorer is great...not a single Tranny problem". Most posts are due to someone having a problem or a question about a fear of a future problem.

If you test drive it and it seems to shift fine and the price is right...it might be worth a shot. Ask when the last time the tranny was flushed, etc.

This forum is for people looking for "help" with their vehicles, that's why you see "negative" posts. All vehicles have problems. Search out some other forums and see for yourself. That being said, check out the vehicle's history before you buy.

my advice .... avoid the 02 model year .. it seems that this year had the most problems especially in relation to transmissions , cam chain tensioners, and rear end whine.

I bought mine new and have had it all. This was the first year of the new model so there was bound to be some bugs. Do yourself a favour and look from 2003 and newer!

I agree with gcomzo, go with an 05 or newer. I have an 05 XLT V8, and so far only issue has been rear axle whine and leather seats cracking. Both covered under warrenty. My sister-in-law has a 07 Eddie Bauer with the V6, no issues at all. Just my 2 cents, this is my 3rd Explorer, and I have had one of each Generation. The first two lasted over 140,000 miles before I traded them in with no major issues ans only routine maintenace needed.
