I was thinking of buying a snowplow for my '07 F-150. The snowplow guys told me that a 150 is too light in the front end to carry a plow. Does anyone here have one on their truck? If so, what kind of mods did you have to do or what problems have you encountered with your plow?
Well, it is technically to light of a truck to carry a plow. A Super Duty would be better.
What do you plan on plowing with this truck? Residential? Commercial? How many places? Are you a person who will be really aggresive when plowing?
I have a 2001 F-150 that does not have the Heavy Duty package (7700 series). I did a couple things to help carry a 700 pound plow on the front end. I installed Timbrens all the way around. I also carry at least 500 pounds of ballast (salt) behind the rear axle.
This is one of two F-150s (the other is a 99) that has a plow on it. We plow commercial and residential properties. I try to take care of my truck when plowing but it still works well. I am actually impressed with how it performs.
Not the same era of truck but just gives you an idea.
I have the Western Suburbanite Plow. Had it on my '03, '06 and now my '08. Never had any issues on any of the trucks. Very lightweight, but full-featured. Weighs about 275 with the frame. Does an awesome job, and goes on and comes off super easy. Doesn't squat the front end at all and doesn't steer the truck going into corners. No ballast necessary.
I put a fisher 7 1/2' rd plow on my 07 supercab. With 500lbs of ballast in the bed this truck actually plows better than my 04 f350 did. I did not do anything to the truck besides the ballast as the front end seems to handle the plow pretty good, only drops about 1 1/2 inchs.
Fordtruckman has one on his STX with the 4.6. I believe it is a 7.5 boss plow, I’m sure he will be along shortly to answer any other questions you have.
I've talked to a few snowplow dealers and they all told me i had to modify my truck to take the plow. I've seen older models of 150's carrying plows and they seem to work fine. I want to plow the familys driveways. we have two businesses with small ten car parking lots each, my parents house, my brothers house, my sisters house, and my house. My house has a quarter mile of driveway. So the plow would be working but not too hard I dont think.
Plowing with the tractor is okay especially when pushing the snowpiles back or pulling snow out of tight areas but I'm getting tired of fighting with the diesel on those cold mornings and sitting in the cold (tractor does not have a cab). Plus the truck plows are way faster.
One snowplow dealer told me i had to get airbags installed on the front of my truck and I know a plow isn't THAT much weight. I just wanted to hear any pro's or cons from guys with trucks similiar to mine who actually have plows on their trucks.
Checkin in As Josh said i got the boss on my truck and havent had any problems but i added HD ($350) springs for the front which helped out ALOT, before i added the springs the front of the truck dropped a lot maybe 3.5-4'' (guesstimate). Now she handles the wait a lot better but the trade off is the ride is a little rougher which kinda sucks in the summer.
As for wear issues, there hasnt been any as of yet but i also only plow my driveway plus 3 others and when I'm not plowing i take the plow off. Good luck.
if youre really concerned about the weight, you can put some Timbrens in the front springs, but as long as you dont go crazy selecting a plow, you shouldnt have to worry about it
thanks for all the info! I just think i'mma go get me a plow. Seeing as the season is pretty near over, I would imagine now or late late winter/spring might be the cheapest time to get a plow. Probably wanna clear out this model years plows and make way for next years.
