Another V10 tire question...

I have a 2003 F250 crewcab 4x2 V10 that I bought used in August of 2007. I use it for towing a 31 foot travel trailer. I thought about getting a new diesel but decided not to becasue I like the V10 and the wife won't let me so have a few questions about tires, wheels etc.

I do want to put a 2 inch leveling kit on it as I don't really want a huge lift on it...any recommendations?

I want to go to bigger wheels/tires as I have the stock 265/75 16" on it now. What is the biggest I can go without any serious mods and I also aw the rickson ad for the 19.5 inch wheels. Can you really fit those on a F250 without any serious mods and how much will gas mileage go down with bigger wheels/tires?

It currentloy has 3.73's so I know I will probably end up going to 4.10's or 4.33.

Any help or advice you could give is greatly appreciated....Thanks

I wouldn't even think about larger tires until I did the rear gear change...which would definitely be 4.30's.

Also, depending on your usage offroad or in frame twisters, I wouldn't go taller than 33" tires.

Yes, you really can run 19.5s without any modifications whatsoever. The beauty of 19.5s on our trucks is that the smallest size, the 225/70R19.5 is only 32" tall, which is very close if not the same (in some cases identical) as the stock tire's overall diameter. It would not effect your gearing (or speedometer). With a 4X4, you could easily accommodate the next size up, which is a 245/70R19.5 as they run between 33-33.5" tall. Most everyone who goes a little taller than stock experiences a slight increase in the fuel economy - not a decrease. The tires are taller and therefore have fewer revolutions per mile. Yes, the tires are heavier than stock because they are steel cased but the commercial-grade rubber is designed for less rolling resistance for economy's sake.

I'm not a fan of big wheels. Larger wheels and larger tires just add more weight and rotating mass. That not only effects acceleration but also effects braking which you don't want on a tow rig. I like the way big tires and a lift look I just don't like the negative effects it has on the truck.

I have 33's (285/75/16) and 3:73s with no lift. Finding tires larger than 285s or 295s with a decent weight rating can be a problem. If you plan to do a lot of towing I wouldn't add a lift or go bigger than 285s or 295s in the tire department. A gear change to 4:30s is a must for heavier towing.

Thanks for the info wheelchick........I like the idea of going to 19.5 to gain the added commercial longevity of the tire. I don't plan on getting some huige lift or anything due to the fact that its a daily driver and I do tow with it. The biggest I would ever go would be the 285's.

Thanks again and I will have to contact rickson and find out how much it would be
