I've done my homework and thought I found the tire I wanted to buy. (Michelin LTX M/S E rated in 285-75-16), but they only make the D rated tire in that size. So now it's a choice between 265 E and 285 D LTX M/S. I'll only occasionally use my EX to pull a 4500 boat. Most all other driving will be family highway miles.
This whole ordeal has gotten me to think about the Silent Armor Pro Grade if they make a 285 in the pro grade.
My experiance with Michelin tires, I would'nt buy another set of them! I have 18,000 on my set and they are spider cracking on the side walls.... On a Excursion.
I just purchased the 285 D LTX M/S and pull a 5000+ lbs. boat all the time. Prior to that I have the Bridgestone Revo in the same size and rating with no problems.

--why did ya switch?? im bout ready for my 2nd set of revo-285's--and pull 9800 tt a good bit--had michy's before but they got hard and wanted to slide all the time after bout 30k--the revo's on the other hand---can you say autocross?--
I only got about 40k out of the Revo's. They performed and looked great! My first set of Michelin's went 60k and still had more. I sold it before the wore out.
check the weight rating of the tires. Towing only 5000 pounds and the D will be sufficient. I have D rated tires and have for the life of the truck. E have stiffer sidewalls but only towing 5k means Ds are fine.
Mine are rated for 3600 pounds. The rear has about 4000 pounds empty and with 1000 tongue weight and some gear puts less than 6000 on the rear axle. Tires are rated for 7200 combined. I am never close to that as my tongue weight is closer to 500.
I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S on my F350 and thought they were a good tire. I took them off and they had 60k on them. I gave them to my dad and he has run them for another 10k. They are extremely slick in the winter but a good tire for getting a lot of miles and they ride good too.
I'm on my second set of LTX M&S 265x75R16 E rated tires. Got 75k on the first set. No crazy off-roading or anything. Pull a 7k lb boat. Good traction in all weather conditions. My 2000X came with D rated tires from the factory.
I also ran 285/75-16 D-rated Revo's on my Excursion. Thats the best tire I've ever run on a truck (just put a set of Revo's on my new Expy EL). I regularly pulled a 30' camper in all sorts of conditions (heavy snow, mountain roads, etc., etc.) and ever had any issues with the tires. Sidewall stiffness seemed to be more than sufficient for towing that long trailer.
Cant speak for the Mich's but for your purposes I dont see where you'll have any issues with a D-rated tire.
i have the ltx m&s 265x75r16 E rated with 20000 miles and they look like new. I pull a 7000 TT in the summer and have had no problems. In the winter these tires stick to the road like glue. on my wife Expedition i have bridgestone Revo's D rated and pull our 7000TT with them and had no problems note though it was for short trips. The Revo's with 4x4 are excellent for wet weather and winter snow covered roads. either of these tire are well worth the money IMHO.
