You have a great opportunity to really compare between the Ford and Chevy. Test drive the new Ford too. I think you will be surprised how much better it is than your 6.0 was in terms of quietness and comfort. Fuel mileage? It all depends a lot of factors. Keep doing your research and good luck with your choice that works best for you.<O</O

what kinda mileage are you getting? Running 37's on the highway I get 14- 16.... but for a average I am getting 10 on the computer (inc idleing) but more like 12 or 13 by the time the tank is done and I have a really heavy right foot.....

I did rent a 2008 F250,cc,swb,4x2 last year for a month and put 6K on it. It got 10-14mpg which is 2 less on average than my 6.0 FX4. I liked the truck, it towed great but the mileage was not what I had hoped. I am still doing some research before I buy.

Anyone know if Dodge and Chevrolet (GMC) have a similar forum to this FTE forum? From the few folks I know in discussions about mpg, I am told the competition has same or worse problems from those that complain here.

well, i replaced my '05 6.0 (many problems) with an '08 dodge 6.7. while the dodge had problems with the early '07.5 models ( throwing codes, and some trubo replacements) mine and most of the later '07.5 and '08 models are doing well. i have about 5000 miles on mine with no issues whatsoever. the mileage i am getting is around 14 in town and between 17-18 on the highway. i am not here rallying for dodge or against any other make. i am just replying to the questions above about what mileage we are seeing.

16.4 Hwy/Cty combined

Yea I did say 12 didn't I? But if you read the rest that was with 10,500lbs attached.

I'll be the first to admit it's not like my orginal dmax with the lb7 when I could see 18-19 combined (hwy/cty).

I don't have an 08 SD so it would be wrong of me to compare but those are my numbers. I think they may go up in the spring as the temps rise. -32 by the house this morning - thats cold.

Dmax is right on the money!! Yeah those are good numbers on the Dmax LMM! My LMM gets the same MPG's if not a little better than my 6.0 Ford power stroke! I am getting 16mpgs in town driving and 11 mpgs while towing my 11-12k toy hauler!!
Empty on the highway going 80mph it's around 19.5-21mpg's....Try those numbers in a 6.4?? Thats a crew cab 4x4 short bed 3,73 gears..........

There have been several posts of The 6.4 with the lighter Fords with 3.73's that are getting close to the 20's with the manuals. The Ford Automatic does seem to hold back a couple of mpg. Most of the other guys posting on this site have heavier Fords with 4.10's, 4.30's and some with 4.88's. It depends what you buy a truck for. If you want the best fuel milage, agree the Chevy's are lighter and are getting better mpg. I am a GM person at heart. But when I sit and drive in the Chevy it does not do it for me. You can have your Chevy, they are a good truck. I will take my Ford Truck anyday over the Chevy or Dodge hands down. When towing I feel like I am the King of the road. My opinion

I just came up U. S. route 30 from Ligonier, PA to top of mountain where we have a place in Laurel Villages. I made maybe 8 passes, cars all over road, multiple cars stuck, no accidents, and no one asking for help, but maybe 8" snow covered highway with ice under. Several tractor trailers spun out. Very narrow roadway, two ways.

My ole 6.4 with some weight in the bed ( my log splitter ), wife and I, spun a little, but straight up without incident. I was the last vehicle that made it, as cars were everywhere, without snow plowed road, and no salt.

Made my day, AGAIN!

I agree an extra gear in the auto would do the 6.4 good in regards to MPG. But with that said and using that logic what is the value of having a diesel over the v10 ?

To chime in...

I have an 08 with the manual tranny with 3.73s & 4wd. My last hand calc'ed tank (all urban driving) was 17. This included about 3 regens and about 450 miles. During extended hwy trips (Gloucester to Va Beach, VA) I get >24MPGs according to the CPU....altough I have not driven hwy in a while. The CPU is very close to the hand calc'ed estimate.

I know I caught a bunch of flack for my posting "22.5" a few weeks ago but it has proven true and it seems to be getting better. I feel for those guys getting low MPGs on their 6.4 but so far (knock on wood) mine has been stellar.

As far as comparing, I test drove a 2008 Dodge diesel manual. It was a nice truck but it is no where near as well built as the Ford. I know Cummins is good (as I hear it) but the actual truck is not as well put together. In fact, I was 90% locked in to buying a local Dodge but I decided to test drive a Ford (3 hrs away in Staunton). After driving both, I immediately bought the Ford. I cannot comment on the GMC as they do not offer a manual with their diesel. I have a buddy with a 2005 GMC Duramax and it is a nice motor and truck but the Ford is better in nearly all facets IMO.

Best of luck....

Dave.
