Well the old girl didn't want to start this morning. I was getting in to go home from work. My truck has ALWAYS started up easy, even when it was really cold out (like in the low 30's). Last night though she died instantly. I tried again and she turned over better, but died. Third time I got her over and kept giving her gas untill she ran without problem. My first instinct is to blame the cold - but my truck has never done that before in the cold.
The cold weather problems could be a dirty IAC. When the deposits get cold the cause the pintle to stick closed and it won't allow enough air through to maintain an idle. Try smacking it a few times with a screwdriver handle the next time it doesn't want to start and see if it helps.
Well guys, I don't have the money right now to really do to my motor what I need to but right now she seems to be running fine.
Thanks for all your help in advance. I'll keep you all updated as to what my truck is doing. (O_o) I'm still stumped though. My truck has never died like that in the cold before.
Off topic; I'm possibly getting a better job soon making twice what I'm making now. Whooo hooo!
My truck feels really strong now (I"m ready to race you, Iceman ) It's been running like a dog lately and now it's running much much better now.
Oh ****! Glad to hear your truck is feeling stronger, now. If you had plugs that were fouled out, new plugs surely would help you notice a difference. It's always good to take them out and check them and see what color they are... to make sure you are gapped right or have any problems in your plug wires.
BTW, my truck was having a horrible idling problem, but I cleaned the throttle body openings and I'm sure it sprayed the IAC motor real good, and then I reset the computer and, man, I have NO problems idling now. I'm so happy that fixed it. Try cleaning your throttle body out with some STP throttle body cleaner.
SilverStreak nailed it. I had a bad throttle body gasket. An easy fix. Now she runs like a new 21 year old truck. Now if i could just find a cab stretcher.
I might be throwing information out too late in the game here, but I had this problem on my '81. I know it's not fuel injected, but either way it would hesitate or sometimes even die when I'd push on the gas. It turned out that it was just a vacuum leak and replacing all the vacuum lines (wasn't in the mood to track down which one it was), fixed the problem. Sucking air in where it's not supposed to go can have drastic effects on any engine. It's an easy fix and not too expensive. If you don't know which one it is, just buy 30' of vacuum tubing and replace each one one at a time and zip tie the ends down. Even if it's not the problem, doing this can only help.
