I have a question. I was just testing out my truck in the parking lot a few blocks away from my house to make sure it works and all before I go away this weekend(you never know if you might need it) and I noticed that it works. But if I have to put it in 4 low you have to be at a complete stop and be in neutral or park i think(only tried it in n and drive but it didn't want to go in while in drive). So one of my questions is that right? Also when I wanted to get out of 4 low it would be the same only in neutral but it seemed to disconnect the whole thing like after hitting the button and the light would go out and then i would be in only 4x4 and I put it back in drive it was like it disengaged the whole t case then if I wanted to put it in park it would grind. So I had to put it back in neutral and then hit the 4x4 button it would go out the light and make a big loud noise then move into drive and it would be fine again. So whats up with that whole shifting from 4 low to 4 high. Its like I have to take it out of 4 low and 4 high and then put it back in 4 high if I want to move again.
The x case fluid. the differential lube, the bearings in the hubs and the hub lock.
And of course now would be a good time to lube any sliding, linkage, bushings with
some white lithium grease or the corrosion stop spray grease from pb blaster.
bearing and hubs are new and packed i just did the x case 5 min ago and it was nasty old dark dark fluid in there. All I have left is the differentials.
What x case do you have? If the fluid was bad you might want to redo it believe me
a gallon of fluid is cheaper than a new one!! Most X case need the tranny in neutral or
park to engage low. You should have the operation right on the visor.
I just did the fluid... Thats what I said.. By the way. Is the rear in my 94 bronco a limited slip and what about the front? If not should I put one in like a e locker or a limited slip or leave it w/e way it is and should I put gears in it? The trucks a daily driver I but I like to take it out on the beach and some trails once in awhile so im not looking to build a crazy 6 in lift truck or anything. If anything later way later I will put a lift on it an it might be like 2 or 4 nothing bigger.
If you have the 8.8" rear differential it will have a cover on the rear. You will probably want to remove it to change the grease, wipe it out and inspect. There should be a tag on one of the bolts. If it shows a L like 3L88 it is limited slip so don't forget to add friction modifier if it is. If no gasket use RTV. When opened up you will see a big "S" shaped clip inside if LS. I retrieved my four wheeler from mud once. I also watched from on top of a stuck tractor and saw both wheels spinning so my LS works. I can't remember if I ever shifted from 4L to 4H and drove it. Yes, must be stopped and in N for shifting in and out of 4L. If yours is electric shift you may want to makes several shifts even if stopped in your driveway every 3-4 weeks to keep the shift motor free.
Has anyone ever used Powertrax because i saw this on summitracing and it would be so much easyer since I dont have to reset the ring and pinion calibrations. Also should I put a limited slip up front or just keep it the way it is?
You got me thinking! Shifting to 4x4 can be done in drive, but shifting in or out of Four Wheel Low has to be done at a complete stop.
If your doing this right, maybe your trasfer case is just shifting slow. Maybe you just need to exercise the transfer case a little. You know what they say, use it or lose it.
Powertrax works great. I would put a locker in the front also. I would change gears if you are going to much bigger tires. (over 33's) I had the push button 4x4 on my old truck. it had a magnetic clutch that would shift to 4H going down the highway. (not recomended) One time going on a trip, my girlfriend got frisky on the highway and bumped my four wheel switch and turned on my search light at the same time. The search light was plugged in to a floor receptical. The light mount began to smoke and I was trying to figure out what was going on with the truck. I finnally saw the 4x4 light and figured I was cooking the transfer case. I shifted out of 4x4 and waited for it to cool. Of course the light kept melting the plastic mount into my carpet. OH the things we do for love! LOL
The powertrax I have in the rear is a locker. I have a lockright locker in the front. In my old Bronco, I had limited slips in both ends. I can tell you this setup is far supperior.
