Unhappy Dead Truck

Hey guys,

New to the forum this morning. I have an 06 Ford Diesel. I recently tried to start it after a cold snap of -40 for a couple of days. The batteries are dead so I boost it and finally get it going. However when I got it running it revved way up on me and continued to rev until I shut it off. It was way over my high idol. Anyone experienced this or know what I can do or what it is. I was going to bring it to the ford dealer but seems it is highly booked up with diesels for the next three weeks, I kinda need my truck before then.

Thanks for any suggestions or information in advance.

Also is there a common boost point for both batteries?

Yeah, you really need to plug the truck in anytime the temp is below about 30ish. I had temps drop to 17 and unplugged my truck was ugly! It took three attempts to get it started...and then she stumbled for a bit before she calmed down.

Now that I've been plugging it in, she fires right up like it was 80 outside!

Yeah I had it plugged in the whole time. I checked the breaker and outlet and electrical cord and everything was fine. I am going to bring it to my parents place and let it thaw out and charge the batteries I guess. Not sure what else to do. Hopefully the injectors will let go once it is heated up a bit.

Yeah, the big thing for you is to get the truck to a 'non-frozen' state then it's easier to diagnose.

I think that's still a little warm to be hooking it up to a heater. Now granted i don't live to far up north, but growing up in Dallas and now living up north in Nashville, I have experianced those temps frequently enough and I have yet to plug my truck in and never once had a problem with starting problems. The lowest temp that it has been out in and no start problems is 11.

did you have the high idle switch on? I am pretty sure if you have it on the engine will idle up pretty high to charge the batteries and then adjust accordingly once they are charged?

Me too. Oh wait it was 80 outside today. Never mind.

The OP said temps around -40. I think the glow plug system is only supposed to be good down to -20 (F not C). Below -20 keep it plugged in and some anit-gel additive would be a good idea.

Cold Ford

Well my truck is at the Dr's office now. We will see how it turns out on friday. It is so bad with this cold snap here in Grande Prairie Alberta Canada that one Ford dealership will not take anymore diesel appointments and the other dealership is booked until the 24th of Feb. No worries though the local chev dealerships have had quite the lineup too with the transmission issues.

Well, my truck will be back from the Dr. tomorrow. Got a call today and they are going to warranty the batteries. However they found a few other issues. The front right hub has a broken seal. $600.00 later it is fixed. Emergency cable is damaged, not sure if it is do to the lift and tires but that is fixed. So here is the question does it make sense that a seal on the hub costs $600.00 to fix and why wouldnt that be under warranty?

just but aftermarket hubs
the dealers just want a lot of money to do it they want to replace the hole hub
you might have a sealed hub and thoses are exspensive cause you have to replace the hole thing

How many miles on the truck? Battery was prob manufacturer warranty. If over 36,000 hub wasn't. Did you ask the dealer why not?

Cold start, too

It got down to 5 deg. F last night and it took 3 attempts for my 6.0L to fire up...in the manual, it states to press the accelerator to the floor if it doesn't fire on the first attempt...this allows no additional fuel. I am worried that the batteries are starting to go dead--it's an '05 with 36K miles...I suppose they are only good for 3 to 4 years?????

Any thoughts on battery life? I did find the block heater plug in and will be using it---the manual states below -10 deg F but I think I would rather use it at around +10 deg F and have a truck that starts.

When do most people use the anti-gel additive?

Thanks--Cold in Montana
