Question clank in drive-shaft

My father has a 1995 Ford F-150, automatic, with the standard straight six (not sure what size). At any rate, whenever the truck is put into gear, either reverse or drive, it makes this bad clank, that can be felt and heard in the cab. We checked the U-joints, and they seem fine. Also, it doesn't seem to do it really when taking off from a stop sign, which we figure is due to the pressure that the drive-train stays under. At this point, we don't really have any idea as to what it could be, so any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Could be your U-joints i think.... test for play in the U-joints on the drive shaft.

Does it mostly happen when you first put it in gear? forward & reverse?

its a 2wd. to check the U-joints, we crawled under the truck while someone put it into gear; they seemed fine. we also grabbed the drive-shaft and tried to move it around, to check for play and it had none. drive and reverse produce basically the same result, neither is worse or better than the other.

if it's primarily the first time it is put into gear you may want to check the motor mounts & or tranny mount, my 89 had a bad mount it was cracked and this caused the same type of intial clunk.

we check that too... (un?)fortunately they are all fine. but thank you anyways... my father and i are really stumped on this one... the truck has 250,000 miles on it, and we might get rid of it.

Hold on just one minute, I'd like to know what causes this. Because my truck does the same thing, except I have a super-cab 4wd with the borg warner transfer, and E40d tranny. When in park there is play in the drive-shaft, like back and forth. I didn't check for up and down movement, but I'll look into it. My dad says it's the transfer case switching directions. It's worse when on a hill. I believe that it has a lot to do with the transmission?

you need to drop the shaft to check the ujoint.

it could be dry and just moving it will not show the problem.

You guys ever think about the parking pall (sp) making a clunk as it shifts? Mine makes noise just like every single auto tranny will. It will also be "worse" sounding on a hill as there is more pressure on it.

Also take a look at you pinion nut on the rear diff. I had one back out on me and it caused that clanking due to excess backlash of the R&P gears. With 250K on it you could have a lot of little things adding up to one big "CLANK"!

Anyone think it might be the gears in the rear differential? Mine were grinding pretty bad and it would send a shock throughout the truck.

I had worked on one that backed out and torn up the bearings to wear I had to do a Ring and pinion.
