why its just getting broke in? is there something wrong with it?
Hey
To be honest the only areas of concerns are, it goes through a bit of oil (3L every couple of months), seems rattly (hey it is a diesel) and the main concern is the "lack" of power. Towing 7000lb my 4.2L diesel landcruiser would leave it for dead!
But I do understand that the "lack" of power could be other things, any suggestions?
It goes "OK" with everyday driving, it just seems sluggish. Max speed towing 7000lb and going up a steep part of our motorway (highway) would be 15 miles per hour! This does not seem right.....correct?
if you haven't checked your air filter and the cdr valve, that could be a large portion of your sluggish performance. as far as the oil consumption, is it burning it or leaking it? my 7.3 had a serious hemorrhage of oil, about a quart a week whether it was cranked or not. had leaks at front main and oil cooler on side of block. got those corrected and made things way better. also when i cleaned the cdr valve and got that functioning better, there was less blow by and less consumption. BTW, if you'll get rid of the soup bowl on the underside of the breather assembly top, that will help the engine breathe better and probably do wonders for power.
For a 6.9 like that, I would sooner replace the injector pump than rebuild the engine.
Any smoke while driving it? (black, white, blue?)
High oil consumption could be the CDR valve, or valve stem seals, but the 6.9 was designed to use a small amount of oil (at the valve stems), and its that feature that gives it the ability to outlive many of the younger 7.3s.
Depending on what you need for a rebuild, you are looking at a minimum of $1000 if you do the work yourself. I have passed $2000, and still counting.
You could also try running a liter of ATF (do not use Dex5) though one tank to clean the injection system out.
The CDR looks like a tuna can. To find it, you pull the air cleaner completely off and you will see it on the far side if the intake manifold, two bolts secure it to the manifold.
Mid west fuel injection has them, haven't heard much wrong with their service so far.
