On my 98 I have the OEM 255-70-16 Aluminum-Mag type wheel. Go in today to have them fix a bead leak, guy brings me out back, here is a 3" long crack from the inside rim edge starting and headed across the wheel. So they put some bead sealer on it, remount the tire, no leak, but I can't see riding on this wheel! They put the spare on, called around found some at a junk yard for $125. Mine are like new, so I want a good one. No sign that I hit anything, just the crack. I feel it is junk, any of you guys left a crack like that alone and kept driving? Did it get worse? Can it be welded? Just looking for some feedback.....
smacked a curb with a EXP couple year ago. same crack. i did not trust it either. bought a real nice aluminum rim set on e-bay for $100 per rim-- if you only need one, maybe you can match yours.
I tried looking for some at the junkyard last year, they didn't have any aluminum ones, so i had to pick up two steel ones. only $30 each. They never did tell me how much for an aluminum one, since they didn't have any anyway.
but sounds like you could pick up 4 steel ones for the price of one aluminum rim.
Well guys... only one place had a rim here in Minneapolis, so I went and picked it up. What they consider "A" quality is ridiculous. Mine is a 98, 3 small holes, 3 big holes, all real shiny. Well, the one I got was DULL, looked the same in all respects, but was for a 97. I put paint stripper on it and all the paint-clear coat came right off, except down in the hole areas. My center cap from the old one is chrome and looks like new, but I' m not real happy. I hit it hard with Mothers, I guess it's OK. At least they all 4 match. Took it to my tire guy, mounted and balanced the old, but good tire, all rides smooth and nothing is bent. The rim was $125, paid the tire guy $40 bucks for all his screwing around, $15 in gas, couple hours of time, have something that looks about as half as good as what I had. But the crack was bad, I had to do something. One last thing I should mention. When I went to pay, the guy says there is a $25.00 dollar core charge! WHAT.... I ask him... I said to forget the whole deal and began to leave, he calls me back and says, nevermind....A core charge on a rim... that's a first. I 'll never go back to this place again, unless, like this time, I needed something ASAP, and they were the only ones... Phew... sorry for the long reply...
