Well for the last few months my 4x4 would grind while going down the road. Well finally yesterday I took it to the dealer and they said it was my shift solenoid. About $38 it is not covered under the powertrain warranty. Anyways do any of you guys know where it is located and is this a hard fix? Im gonna try and tackle it myself.
When you say gring, do you mean grinding as it engages while driving? Mine does this 10% of the time. Plus it seems slow to engage (up to 8 seconds). Is this the shift solenoid? 04 Ext cab. Sorry don't mean to hijack this thread...
Well yes it is trying to engage while going down the road. Turn to 4x4 and it will quit. joe is it plug and play? Also they said it comes with some kind of valvebody or something to that affect.
Hivoltage....it's really pretty easy. I had to do it on my 06 when I had it...If I remember corectly I think its just the wire harness cliped onto it then just the 2 hoses I believe. I had the first one go bad, then the second One I replaced. I saw the rain roll righ off the cowl and onto the top of the solenoid and said "that can't be good" SO i bent up my own cover(should have got a patent on it!!!) Now the new solenoid comes with the cover.

Yes it's plug and play, just as 96F150 stated above, it's an electrical plug and the vacum lines. Mine in the pic is already the new updated one with the plastic hood built in. Good luck
