I have a 94 Aerostar that is getting a bad case of rocker panel rot. It is at a point that I could cut it out and not have to go too far up the side of the van. Do they sell "stick on" replacement panels for this. I've heard that many of the replacement body panels are now held on with adheasive rather than tacked on. It's been a long time since I've done any body work, but I hate to let the little thing go. It's been a good family van and now a good work van for me. I figured if they make such a thing, I would cut off the rust, stick on the panel and have it sprayed with Line X or coat it with Herculiner. It has 186K on it with no problems and will probably only get a few more years, but I baby it along as far as I can.
I had a palm sized rusted area on the right rear rocker. Having just finished sealing my gutters with an impressive liquid adhesive (whose name escapes me at the moment), I decided to try the adhesive route. I've done many brazings, hammer welds and MIG welds on panels, but the adhesive method is by far the best way to do these repairs. No heat distortion and the adhesive seals the entire panel edge(s). Plus, you can pre-paint the backside and not have your sealer burned off during assembly as with the other methods. That sealer flows out nice and flat giving a very nice finished look. I may never use the torch again.
have used their Silaprene Elastomeric Adhesive/Sealant on body panels and rust hole sheet metal repairs. tougher than spot welding. adhesive body sheet metal repair is fast replacing MIG wire feed. easier to learn, fast, simple, strong, holds paint well, not rust at metal damaged weld sites.
