initial plan: (78 bronco)
replace quart of oil per 75 miles 429 with 460 built as follows....polished beams (already done), ARP bolts, TRW forged flattop pistons with 19cc cup for 9-9.5:1 CR with 92cc chambers, street port, roller inserts for stock arms, and about 218 @ .050 cam....with a stock converter, is this ok???oh, and edelbrock intake/carb
also, with the above setup, i wanted to also go with 4.10s and 39s....i currently have 4.56s with the 39s and run about 3650 rpm at 60, and can spin the tires...how will my bronco's characteristics suffer from the 4.10s???
i was just thinking that the added torque and the way i planned on building it would compensate for the higher gears, yet be more 60mph friendly.....
LAST EDITED ON 13-Sep-01 AT 10:20 PM (EST)[p]thats not right, i turn about 2600 at 65 with my 37 inch boggers
60/39*336*4.56= 2,357, which is about perfect, add about 100-300 for convertor slippage depending on load, with 4.10's 60/39*336*4.1=2119 rpm, which is a lil low, my 37's & 4.10's with my mild 460/c6 can be spun with ease, back to your bronco, 3600 rpm's is alot thats about what youd be tunrin in 2nd gear with 4.56's first take the c6 second gear 1.57 1.57*4.56=7.1592
so 60/39*7.1592*336=3700, check your tach, your speedo shoudl not be off mroe than a few mph since u have the correct gears, are u sure u dont have a 7.17 gear, lol, jus double check everything
I know the speedo is right....i clocked 60 in a 45 and saw the clock....was turnin 3650 right on...checked tach against my dwell tach...so it's right....one thing....M/T 39s, at about 30% tread remaining are only 37" tall (37" is a rough etimate)....but i probably will not be going with much larger tires....i was looking into getting 38.5/15X15 Ground Hawgs, but they are still only 38" tall NEW......i was going to go with 40" groung hawgs, but they are wider than i want....the M/Ts are hard enough to turn....
also....what can i do to make the steering easier???if i rev it, i can turn the wheel easier...would a new PS pump do the trick maybe???or is a ram assist the only way to help???
are u sure your tranny shifts into 3rd gear? If you are running the 39/18.5 mickey's then the tires being so wide is probably why the steering feels so hard, even the 39/15 mickeys would feel kind of hard, i woudl not worry about it
OH YEAH...it shifts into 3rd...new tranny with TCI valve body...i can FEEL the shifts really well....
the steering feels like my stock bronco did when all the PS fluid leaked out....
are u SURE that you have 4.56 gears? something here is not right at all, with the rpms you say your turning, you would have to have something around a 7.17 gear in the rearend, somebody else know somthing???? is the pump original? does it leak? whine?

Something's not right. According to my calculations your RPMs with those gears and tires at 60 mph should be about 2300. I'd say you have a trans problem or something.
gotta consider: my 39s are only 37 inches tall....
so anyway....assume i did get 4.10 gears and 39s that are really 39 inches tall....with the above build, would performance suffer noticeably??
as far as the PS pump goes...it doesn't leak or whine...i guess it probably would if it were bad????

OK so assume your 39s are only 37 in. tall, your rpm should still be less than 2500 so you still have some sort of tranny issue. As far as performance goes, it depends on how your engine is built, i.e. what torque range is your cam, etc. If you went to true 39 in tires and 4.10 gears you should be turning 2100 rpm in 3rd gear.
