Thought I'd pass on a little info on the latest oil change on my '03 with 120k miles. The last few changes were Rotella 5/40w CI-4 plus synthetic with great results. Yesterday I used 15/40w CJ-4 Chevron Delo oil with Ford oil filter. One big difference right off the bat was the sluggish start this morning. The temp last night was around 32*F. In the past, start ups in the mornings with the Rotella were immediate and smooth with little white smoke when the lowest temps here in New Mexico were as low as 17*F. The write ups for the Chevron oil indicated a low temp rating of !0*F. I do a lot of towing, and the Delo 15/40w oil is recommended. For those of you in colder climates, I would suggest waiting for warmer weather before making the change from the 5/40w syn to 15/40w CJ-4 oil...IMO.
Why did you decide to change back to 15-40 when you already had something good going with the 5-40 synth? I may be wrong, but I thought you could use 5-40 syn year around.
anyone ever try the semi synthetics? Like the castrol? 1/2 the price of full syn but what does the real world test have to say? hhhhmmmmmm
I will probably try that if my truck ever comes back from the dealer. If so I will chime in. I use the rotella 5w-40 now and thinks its great but @ 45k and an oil change every 5-6k it gets pricey.

I saw a recent statement from Ford saying that if towing heavy loads above 50 degrees F, then one should/must use 15W40. This was the cautionary note regarding the use of 5W40.
I just switched from 15W40 Rotella T to 5W40 Rotella T Synthetic ('05 @ 29K miles), and this morning was around 0 degrees F and the start-up was nice and smooth. Right now, the truck has been sitting in 10 degree F temps all day and I suspect that again, I'll get a real smooth start-up.
I, too, don't haul heavy loads, maybe upwards of 3500 pounds worth of enclosed snowmobile trailer, or just hauling one (500-pound) sled in the bed, so I think I'll be good for year 'round use of 5W40 syth here in Chicago.
The reason I changed is because I tow a 12k# 5er yearound. The new CJ-4 oil is recommended for pulling heavy loads as well as a being a good oil design for the low sulfur fuels being introduced across the country. After reading several posts on this forum and reading the write ups for CJ-4 oil, I thought I'd give it a try. If the results "feel" positive, I will probably stick with it, but if not, I can always go back to the Rotella.
I recently starting using the Schaeffer's 15W-40 semi-syn. I plug in at night, but today it sat out all day unplugged. At 22 degrees it fired right up. Not as smooth as 5w-40, but no hesitation and the idle smoothed out within just a few seconds. If it continues to do well through the winter, I may just stay with it - a few bucks cheaper than their full syn, and a better weight for towing.
I should mention that I haven't been plugging in the block heater this year because the syn worked so well. Mark, where do you get the Schaeffer's? I usually depend on Wally World for price and availability, but would prefer syn or as you mentioned: semi-syn.

Went to their website and found a local distributor:
no schaeffers in new england guys. I know i've read the name here alot what makes it so special. everyone seems to love it when the oil talk comes up but just curious.
when my truck gets back from the dealer I am due an oil change and going to use Mystik semi-syn 15w40 cj4 rated and made by citgo. Available at Tractor Supply 19.85 for 2 gallons
I know there is a lot of talk of what type and how often to change but I go every 5-6k and over 75% of that is highway or open road driving very little city. In these lean times if you can be save some pennies without risking damage to you truck is it not worth it?
There is a guy named Rob near the CT/NY state line, I got his number from Schaeffer, he's the closest for us in New England. I just ordered some of the 9000 Supreme, fuel additive and oil analysis kits. We'll see how it goes, but after seeing the post with the UOA it seems like the Schaeffer is at least good as Rotella synthetic.

That was the story before Ford started selling 5W-40 synthetic themselves, now they seem to think its great stuff.
