Hi everyone. My truck's clutch works only intermittently. 1989 4x4 F-150 4.9Ltr 5spd man. Sometimes works fine especially if the brake pedal feels extremely solid. Other times the pedal only returns halfway up after letting my foot off of it. Sometimes the clutch doesn't disengage when I press the pedal and the pedal stays all the way down on the floor. Just bought the truck a month ago but it has a new clutch master cyl. and supposedly a new clutch assembly. The slave cyl. is the type that's internally mounted (concentric?) but don't know if it is new. It's pretty shiny but could be just because it's located in the bell housing.
My dads 92 had a worn clutch and brake pedal bracket that caused issues like this. Most of the times his clutch pedal would not return all the way. Look under the dash where the pedals hang from and see if there is any slop in the bar that the pedals pivot on. The right side on my dads had an egg shaped hole worn into it after the plastic bushings wore out. Here's picture of the repair that I did to the bracket:
I believe the master cyl for the clutch is mounted to the floor in this year , it was in the van I had, the floor fractures around the cyl and when you push on the clutch peddle the floor moves down, and not the push rod in the cyl. Check the floor for movement when the clutch is pushed.
Pickups are on the firewall and this year had the flex problem. I also have an E150 with the flex-i-floor. Made my own reinforcement and solved much of the problem.
I appreciate the advice. I have checked the linkage and the plastic bushing. All seem to be in pretty good shape. At least to my novice eyes. The hydraulic line running from the master cylinder to the slave looks like it's brand new.
Could my symptoms be something as simple as air in the system?
