I have a 92 f-350 2 wd that is natural aspirated with 180000 miles on it. I used to get about 16.5 mpg highway going 55 with a 4.10 gear which i thought was pretty good. Since the speed limit changed to 65 round here the fuel mileage has really dropped. I have always wanted to put a ats turbo on it. I was wondering if my motor will come unglued if i install a turbo on an engine with this many miles on it.
bigger tires will reduce your rpm's, the next best thing is regearing or getting s five speed trans
Ditto. I have 4.10s too and swapping in a ZF 5-speed with a .77 OD 5th gear dropped my RPMs at 65 mph from around 2900 to 2200.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Not only is the fuel mileage much better, but it doesn't sound like it is straining just to get up to 70 mph either....
Regearing the axles or putting bigger tires will work too, but they not only raise your top end speed on the highway, they take away some of your bottom end too. To get the same effect on top end with gears you'd have to go all the way down to 3.08s, I know yours is 2WD, but for the 4WD guys you've got to do both axles - for about a grand per axle
To get the same amount of top end improvement with bigger tires you'd have to go from the stock 235/85/16 (31.7" diameter) to a 41" diameter tire. That's pretty big, and even if you went with some 35's or 36's you'd only get about half as much improvement as you would with the 5 speed.
IMO, the 5 speed or an OD like a Gearvendors is the only way to go...

I appreciate the information. Yes i have an e4od with overdrive. I dont want to put a taller gear in the truck because it has to pull i lubrication trailer to the job. Load with oil and grease that trailer can get pretty heavy.

Well, if you already have the OD, then that isn't an option for you. Just goes to show that what our old buddy Dave Sponaugle says is really true. Your right foot has more effect on your fuel mileage than anything else!
I'm assuming you've been running some fuel addative to keep the pump & injectors nice & clean, and the timing has been checked so that everything is running as well as it can. Have you considered (or already done) a K&N airfilter and some intake/exhaust mods to help it breathe better? Those are good for a couple mpg at least...
