hey all, i've got an 89' f150 4x4. i need to install a new t-case. i found a bw1756 and the one in the truck is a bw1356. are they interchangeable. what's the difference, or is there any. oh ya, my 89 is an auto.
Not sure dude...but the guys over in the Offroad forum could probly help you out with that ?....not tryin to turn you away...just tryin to turn you in the right direction.....good bunch of guys in there.....
I don't know what a 1756 is, but it doesn't sound like it will fit. If you really want the least amount of problems, replace it with whatever's in there now.
The 1356 was used in my truck. Maybe thats where ur being confused. F350. I know there are the manual shift tcase, and the electronic shift tcase. Thats prob the number difference. If you go to ebay and type in ur tcase number it will come up and the pages will tell u. My 1356 isnt plastic. There isnt any on it that I can see. No way the gears inside are plastic, or the chain. lol The 1756 was used in the 97-98 F250/F350 from my research. As I need a tcase also.
Not sure where you got your facts about 'more plastic parts'...
My truck has the 1356 (electric shift - it comes in both varieties) and I've dissembled it before. The only plastic parts that I can remember are the small tabs on the shift fork, the oil pump, and part of the clutch assembly (the creme colored plastic fork behind the spring in the picture). Here's pics of mine:
Closeup of the plastic shift fork tabs that sometimes wear out:
These plastic parts are not under heavy stress so there's no problem with them being there, they wont break. The only ones that can be an issue are the plastic shift fork tabs. But with proper usage, lubrication, and maintanence they shouldn't create a problem. Cracked mine open at 100k miles and the guts of the ENTIRE case looked brand spankin new, as you can see.

In fact, I'm not seeing ANY Borg Warner cases there with models that start with 17__ at all. Not to say they dont exist but damn thats a pretty big list to not include any 17__ cases
My apoligizes I should have worded that a little cleaner, that t-case was described to me as having plastic components, not that they were cheaper but be weary of them, in other words when that shift **** sticks dont go yanking the crap out of it, i personally have never had a problem with mine or know of ne1 that has had a problem actually related to plastic parts in the case.
