Price for changing gears??
Also, how hard are they to put on? I put my leveling kit on myself, and thats about the level of mechanical skill.
Say it's a 2wd and you want to put 4.10s. You will need a professional to do it, and if your lucky labor will only be $300. Ring and pinion will be around $200, and a master install kit will be around $100, so at best, it will be $600 to regear to 4.10s for one axle(if it's 4wd, you must do both).
I'm not trying to talk you out of it, it is a good upgrade, and ford should offer it(not just in HD package), but it is expensive and something you should not attempt your self.
I know how to do it, read many articals on installing Ring and Pinions, seen several tech videos, but don't have the tools(more to it than basic tools) or confidence to attempt it my self. Because IF I mess it up, that's $300 in parts I just messed up, plus the axle housing its self could be damaged, and require and new axle to pay a professional to regear anyway would cost a lot more than if I just let them do it in the first place.
Its a 2004 Scab, 4.6L 4X4. The tires I just put on are 285/70/17 BFG A/T
Basically a 32.7 inch tire. Looks good with the leveling kit and everything, but now the steering is really heavy, and it shifts a lot more on small hills that it didn't have to before. Don't get me wrong, I knew there would be a little of this stuff with bigger tires, but I sure do miss that totally stock ride. On the other hand, leveling kit and bigger tires makes the rig look tough!
The gears are spendy, but it sounds like if you can get the cash, and have them done right, it might help out quite a bit.
Any suggestions on the steering feeling a lot heavier? Thanks again!
About the heavy steering.... don't know. Haven't had it in my truck. Those BFGs weight a little more than stock but I don't think you should feel the difference.
I would try calling a couple different 4wd shop in your area, they usually do gear changes all the time, and can do them a lot cheaper than ford.
It would make a whole new truck, but it's hard to justify the money. If you plan on keeping the truck a long time, and keep the same tire size, and tow with it occasionaly, it might be worth your wild!
Just curious, if you get some price quotes from your area, let me know(I'm guessing on prices on these newer trucks.....the older trucks I know cost less....but not by much)
