Hi guys, hopefully someone can provide me some insight on what to do for this.
I bought my 2002 F350 Lariat Supercab long bed back in the spring time, with 53,000 miles on it. absoultely beautiful virgin truck. Runs perfect. The only questionable thing was that sometimes when taking a hard turn from a dead stop, i would feel this shuddering / chatteing from the rear. it is enough to really shake the truck when it happens.
I showed it to the dealer where i bought the truck, and he said it must be the clutches? in the rear end grabbing too much when making the turns from a stop. He took the truck in and serviced the rear diff, including some additive that makes them grab a little less? BTW, its a 3.73 rear.
It seemed to help some, but never went away 100%, and of course now my warranty through the dealer is over.
I was really noticing it yesterday when driving. Every time i took a right turn from stopped at a light, i really felt the chatter or shudder.
I would go with a little more friction modifier my dad has a 02 with 134,000 miles no problems and a friend has one with almost 200,000 miles other than service has done nothing to it. I have a Dana 80 in my dually and run Royal Purple with no modifier (none is needed ) and my LS works good with no noise.
I highly doubt the rear end is worn out, the truck was a one owner who was an older guy who passed away and really didnt use the truck. Hence the 5 year old truck with 53k on it.
So just more friction modifier you suggest? What exactly is causing this? I've had a few other trucks includig an older F350 and never felt this shudder before
The clutches are grabbing not sliding smoothly the modifier is super slippery stuff alittle goes a long way . I'm with you that rear diff. has many more miles in it. I honestly would just change it . Put Royal Purple in and forget it .
first need to make sure it has synthetic oil in it if so probly needs a little more modifier
you didn't say if it was DRW or SRW,the DRW tends to chatter worse
as far a wore out clutches I would be more worried if it didn't chatter some
my dually has chattered over 100k miles, just something I live with
BTW when it didn't chatter the clutches were shot
I tow a 12,500 lb 5er and get the chatter when I take off from a stop, or if I am "spirited" when unloaded. Worse when turning and take off. At 60K miles took it to jiffy and had fluid changed and a bottle of Ford limited slip conditioner added at the same time. Went to a parking lot and drove a right hand tight circle about 10 times and then left about 10 times (slowly). Repeated the process in reverse. The chatter was gone. About 15 k since then and I am getting it again, so my plan is to just add some more conditioner. Will let you know...
