Looking to purchase an '02 F550, is diesel, 4x4, with auto transmission. Has approx. 93K on vehicle. I have not had much good experience with automatic transmissions in any vehicle other than a car. How do the transmissions hold up in heavy duty towing vehicles like this one?
I have the auto in my 02 F-550 that is towing pretty much daily and often loaded as well.
I haven't had any issues to date, had the trans serviced at 36k (fluid and filter).
Same trans in my 99 F-450, 01 F-350, and 02 F-350 dumps that all tow and haul almost daily.
Now, if the truck has been chipped or will be chipped, you will want to beef up the trans.
My lifted 01 F-350 4x4 toasted the stock trans in 36,000 miles. 35-38" for pretty much all of it's life, driven hard, chipped for half of the miles, smoke shows, pulling stuck dump trucks and semi trucks, etc..
Now, I have a BTS trans which is awesome.
