You do have to change to the 429/460 torque convertor.
I was in the middle of the swap and a more than anxious friend offered to crawl under and hook up the tranny to engine.
In the process the bellhousing Flange Broke as the person tried tighening the bolts to FIT it better.
The result a $50 Bill for Aluminium Welding and a $120 Bill for a 429/460 TC + installation.
The Round Button on the 400M T C doesn't fit inside the Crankshaft on the 429/460.

Mil1ion, you said that 429/460 have to have different torque converters than a 400m. Is this true??? The reason I ask is because I put a 460 in a 78 F-150 with a C-6 that had a 400m and didn't replace the torque converter. Will this damage the engine or tranny?? It seems to run perfect.
We have swapped a 351w for a 460. We are using the L&L motor mounts and accessory brackets. If you don't use the mounts from L&L or AA, you'll need to buy the complete set of factory mounts and frame mounts from ford. It just seems that L&L really has a great solution that just bolts on with very little hassle. We have not updated our site yet about the L&L installations as we are waiting to get a new A/C compressor before we take the final pictures. However, I can say that we are very pleased with the final result. On a car, the sump in the front, in a truck, the sump is in the rear. An oil pan alone is over $150 from a ford dealer. Also, our research has shown that the truck 460's are indeed a heavier duty motor. The block may be the same, but what goes inside the block is not. Do your homework up front, it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. I can speak from experience on this as we ran into a few snags along the way on this project. The car oil pan is already rear sump.. So I have no need to worry about that. As I have said before.. My truck will probably never see any heavy duty use like 4 wheelin or towing again. This is being built more as a show vehicle than anything else. As you had said that frame mounts need to be changed.. On my setup I only need to change the motor mounts. Also as said before my only concern was the tranny. I may have to change the tailshaft on it to fit in my truck. I'll let the shop worry about that for me. Being I am having it rebuilt as well. For those that havent read above.. I am dropping a C6 and 460 out of a 75 Mercury Marquis into my truck below.
