We just put a LUK SMF in my 88 ZF5 this spring. The gear noise goes way up, and frankly I don't like it since it never used to do it, and I like idling in first or second gear if I am in a field or going slow for some reason.
I did try putting more fully synth oil in, as suggested by some folks, and the noise went way down, but then I could barely shift the thing when it got cold. It was fine when it warmed up.
So, if it was me, and I was to do it again, I'd put a DMF in. I've seen new ones sell at a reasonable price, and they last 140-150k miles anyway...
Strange, the clutch/flywheel I used was from Valair (texas). The noise was up, but not as bad as some have noted. Gear clatter above 1500 RPM was none existent. Puttering at around 1200 was very noticable, but that is not where trucks generally spend most of there time. That was a powerstroke, but I doubt it makes that much difference.
I have a friend that was a ford trans tech and service manager for 30 years he said they would change to 90 weight at the dealers for customers that used their trucks hardeven in the little rangers.
My 97 ranger has gear rattle in neutral with ac on and even some with it off but goes away when i push the clutch in. It only started after installing a quality oreillys clutch kit. is this related to what you guys are talking about and can i run 90 weight in it instead of atf like sposed to be in it. srry for getting off subject.
