Can you post a picture of the rubber cap you found? Is it connected to a wire? I'll look at my truck and see if I see anything similar. If you can
t post a pic, email me at d_e_sloop at hotmail dot com

thanks, Indy. Here's a photo I just took, put a quarter there for size reference. I don't know if it's a crucial part, or something the dealership mechanic dropped and left in there. Looks like it should be on something, though. maybe on the end of a wire connection and that's causing an arch. I'm stumped.
Allan.

so in referrence to this thread (which is extremely helpful), my '98 4.6 5sp recently started doing this shortly after i just purchased it. the engine only has a mere 73k on it and was replaced this past spring. when they replaced the engine, they also installed new Autolite Platinum plugs and Autolite wires (from the local Advance). truck has run great untill last night on the way home it started missing under a load, especially if it was in high gear.

i started investigating the miss tonight, outside where it's dark and didnt have any light, to see if i could spot any arching from any of the wires. found nothing on the wires but did find a vacuum leak that i fixed and that helped the problem ALOT but didnt fix it.

scanned it and it come up Misfire on #7, checked the wire which is good and still looks new, pulled the plug and checked it and it still looks good. even swapped the 7 & 8 wires and took it for a test drive with no change.

im wondering if i need to get new Motorcraft Platinum plugs and Ford Racing wires, and/or new coil pack. any thoughts?

I've had this problem several times and simply replaced the coil and it fixed it. This time that isn't fixing the problem though. After reading this thread it seems like the plug wires might be the next thing to try. From what I understood though, there are no traditional style plug wires, that the coil packs take the place of the distributer and plug wires...? Can somebody please explain or show me a picture of exactly which wires you are replacing.

My truck is a 2000 4.6, it seems as though they might have changed to the COP style in that year? If so what else could I check besides the actual coil pack and spark plugs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this problem is really starting to get old!

Dank5 I just had the same problem, I replaced the o2 sensor, new set of plugs and fuel filter, but I did not resolve the problem unti I removed the #8 clyinder injector and soaked it in denatured alcohol and it runs great!

Here's the skinny-
Vehicle: 99 F150 2WD ext cab LWB 4.6 & manual. Current mileage: 143840. When purchased(Oct 03) it had an intermittent misfire. Shortly after I bought it(98k miles) I replaced the plugs(Autolite) & wires(Motorcraft) and fuel filter. Tested some of the easier things the Haynes manual suggested but found nothing. It ran good for a few weeks then began misfiring again. Ran some GM fuel injector/system cleaner & it ran normal for 2-3 weeks then back to missing again. The miss was only under load, never at idle. Got a code for the EGR once so replaced it. It still missed. I took off the top piece on the intake and cleaned the clogged EGR ports, this was late 2004. The engine mis-fired intermittently until recently when it gave a code P0350. It’s missing at idle etc and drinking gas. Replaced plugs again(Motorcraft SP432 Jan 08). Still misses at idle and under load constantly.

I'm wondering if I’ve clogged the cat running it this long with a mis-fire. Never thought of that. What to suspect? injectors? Coil pack? Is there a way to test the coil packs? I do not have COP.

Thanks, Dan
Try soaking the injector in denatured alcohol!

With Engine running, you will not get a shock, slightly disconnect each coil pack and when the engine's tempo does not change or change slightly there is your problem.

This thread is a couple years old and is still alive and well. Seems to be helping people still and thats great. Just an update on mine. It is running great and the Ford Racing Wires solved the problem once and for all.

In a bit of irony, I got an email update to this thread last night... and thought "Hey... It's been a long time since I've seen anything from that thread"
Low and behold my truck starts missing this morning on the way to work... Fealt all too familiar. Here we go again. This will be the 3rd coil pack. It now has 103k on it. Hopefully it's another easy one to get to. It's 10deg. out there, and my garage is too full to get the truck in to work on it.

That sucks. I was a little reluctant to say mine was running great because I didn't want to jinx it. You might try the heavier gauge racing wires too.

It was the #1 cylinder. Took longer to find my tools and extra plugs than it did to switch it out. Still froze my fingers off though.
"racing wires" Mine is COP... No plug wires.
