You wanna know a secret? Mud-terrain tires are only superior to all-terrains in deep mud and deep snow. In every other situation, all-terrains perform better.
I really don't think the OP is planning on going mud-bogging, or he would have known better than to even ask this question.

really? hmmmm.....the ONLY thing all a/t's are better is on road characteristics...which is important, yes.....but saying that m/t are only better at deep mud and snow is asinine.....m/t's will out perform a/t's every form of offroading....whether that be on the side of the road or in the deep mud like you say...
BFG A/Ts are over price pieces of junk. They last a decent while, but suck on anything other than dry packed dirt (not sure about snow, haven't seen any in 10+ years). They have the worst thread cleaning pattern I've ever seen, which is why they cake up so fast and become useless.
ATs will outperform MTs in dirt, grass, sand, ice, shallow snow, and pavement.
Last time I checked, dirt, grass, and sand were considered off-road.
You're right, they don't clean very well. That's why it's not a "mud-terrain" tire. No all-terrain tire is going to clean very well in mud. That's not what they are designed for. However, they will still outperform any stock all-season tire in the mud.
Name another terrain besides deep mud and deep snow where a M/T will outperform an A/T. I can't think of a single one. Oh, I guess rock climbing. But I don't think the OP was concerned about that either.

you sir are absolutely wrong....well maybe ice, i have no expeirence there.....but dirt? are you kidding me? yep thats why you see so many corr trucks or baja trucks that run a/t's b/c of all that "traction" and "performance" in dirt and sand.... its the same way with grass.....how is somthing with less traction going to out perform....
try again buckwheat....
