Either can be done with the time and money. What year of truck, EFI or carb, street legal? There are a lot of questions and options to go with. All depends on your skills and the amount of money you want to spend.
5.0L is much easier. The 4.6 is much wider and would require extensive modification to fit. One member on here has done it and did a very nice job of it. He used a 4.6L DOHC from a lincoln Mark VIII.
Nah the DOHC is way tight, that was a SOHC 4.6 in a 98 2wd Ranger. There is a guy hanging around TRS putting a SOHC into a Gen I Ranger. The 302 is much easier and there is much more support and aftermarket. If you have the time, space and skills pretty much anything can be done.
Zach that 528 is NOT the biggest engine I could find thats why I am currently building a 572, and if things go well it will be a Boss headed (hemi) 572 making 4 digit hp numbers NA.
physically the saying is if a DOHC came out of the engine bay a 429/460 will fit in place of it even with Boss 9 heads if that gives you an idea. That little engine is as wide and tall as a big block.
If I can be honest with you, going with a stock 302 isn't going to impress you after a short bit. 302s aren't powerhouses by any means. Since physically the 351 shares block sizes, I would suggest that, as minimally more mods are required.
I went with a mildly hopped up 302, so I was satisfied (until I wanted more power lol), but stock, just to give you an example, I have a '98 Explorer. In '98, the 4.0L SOHC (which I have) put out 205 horsepower. The 5.0L/302 V8 put out 210 horsepower. The 4.0L SOHC actually 0-60's and quarter miles faster than the 302. Pretty sad, huh? The 302's old school technology in a new school world.
The only problem with putting a 351 windsor in is that the engine is taller and wider than a 302 since the deck height isn't the same. The intake on a 351 is 1.5" wider than on a 302 because of the taller deck. In all the 351 is about 3 inches taller. That means different headers as well since the exhaust ports sit higher.
A 351 is 21" wide where a DOHC 4.6 is 30" wide!!!! A 460 BB is only 26 inches wide but 4 inches longer than a 4.6.
If I had the money to do the swap I would probably go with a FRPP Z head crate engine with 390HP and 360 TQ or do something like a 331 stroker with a mild turbo.
