Its funny how you can do more research on past adds and find more problems. A truck like that is still pretty cheap if you have to put a tranny into it, if you can find a good cheap used one.
Transmissions from Pickapart are $94.95. There is a place not far from PAP that will install it for another $300.
You get it for 100 bucks just because you have to yank it yourself. Its like anything else a guy buys used, ya take a chance.
Most pic-a-part places will have a limited exchange warranty - if it fails withing so many days (months), ya bring it back in and you can pick out another one.
So if you have some time, and not so much money (or just enjoy the sport of it) and (ideally) have access to more than one vehicle so you can live with a little downtime, and you're doing all or most of the work yourself (so install/uninstall costs aren't killing you), this can be an educational and (relatively) inexpensive, even mildlly profitable (if you're good, and lucky) hobby.
The advantage of the pic-a-part yard is that you see the transmission (or other parts) in the vehicle, so you try and do some looking to increase the chances of getting a good tranny eg: signs of a tranny having been swapped into a now obvious smooshed vehicle (ie: it wasn't the tranny that killed it).

Reason: typo
I love the pickaparts. I love going and yanking stuff off of vehicles there, and even just looking around to see what all my mind thinks of for me to buy and build/fix.
when and while i can afford it, i go new. engines/trannies are a different story as the prices are way up there for new stuff... i guess for 100 bucks you could easily take it to be rebuilt or checked out at least...
It also depends what your putting something used into. If its a legit restoration then why not rebuild it, have it like new. In wrecks case, it sounds like its more of just a beater truck.
