Ok,
On my way to work in the morning I'll try to listen for the seperate shifts and pay attention this time.
I will report back either from work or when I get in tomorrow evening.
Drove to work this morning ~40*F, TC definitely locking up @ ~45mph.
Only hung in D one time, had already accelerated to ~60mph and was maintaining my speed, RPM' around 3100.
Never shifted from D (3rd) to OD (4th) until I gave it a couple more RPM and let off quickly.
This is not a huge issue, I would just like to understand why it is doing this, and is there something that will keep it from doing this.
At work until 1630 CST, so may be unable to reply to any responses until later tonite.
My tranny would shift from first to second, but hang there. I found that the solenoid pack was bad. Had it replaced and it has worked great since. Everything is electronic. I had a VSS go bad once and caused the tranny to act up.
I am leaning toward you TC not locking up. I say this because the TC should lock up around 35 mph under normal driving conditions. We need to ket Mark K. in on this thread or send him a PM, he's one of the tranny Gurus on this site.

I thought of that also and is easy to check, just lock out overdrive
also thought about short in OD switch or wire, which has been a problem

There's a good idea. Turn the OD off, let it go through the gears normally and then at about 50 mph just turn it back on. It should go right in without any fooling with the throttle. I have never heard about just 1/4 of the solenoid pack acting up, but that may be possible. A transmission expert I ain't, just a graduate of the school of hard knocks with mine.
Sorry for the delay things have been crazy at work.
Ok with OD OFF, I can feel/hear 3 different shifts/actions, when I turn OD ON it shifts immeadiately into OD.
With OD left ON, I can feel 3 different shifts/actions including when it shifts into OD.
Is it possible the TC is locking up simultaneously with the shift into OD?
This problem don't sound so bad now. Get the codes read at a tranny shop. Maybe the computer is doing something wrong. You have a chip? If part of the shift solenoid is failing I don't know if doing the on/off trick with the button will trick it or not. For right now you can get by with just doing it manually.
Thanks everyone for your help.
First chance I get I'll take it to the shop and see what they say, it's darn hard to find a shop that I trust.
Maybe you can find someone close with a scantool, predator programmer or AE software that can see the speed at which your TC is locking up. So you know what it is exactly before dumping money down the big tranny botomless pit. If you are close enough to Lawton, OK you are welcome to stop by. The NTxPSA also meets once a month in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area.
Sure sounds like the mechanicle diode problem most 01's expirence. Mine just went thru this and 1450.00 later she is as good as its ever been. Usually though it wont shift into second gear, but mine started with sometimes not going into O/D and then finally wouldnt shift into second unless you let off the gas than basically got worse. Do yourself a favor take it to a GOOD tranny shop, check the codes and go from there. If you need a rbuild, there is a updated set up to get rid of the diode problem and I did a tugger kit which is adjustable for the shift points AND I did a new torque convertor which is highly recommended if the tranny is out. Good luck!!
