Hard Starting Issues

Recently my '00 Ex has been difficult to start. It turns over but then dies like its not getting fuel. If I hold the gas like older vehicles it will keep running. This morning it cut off even after holding the gas to get it to turnover. There is also a smell of fuel. I'm guessing this is from holding the gas pedal. Well, after it gets going it's fine. I'm hoping it may be a clogged filter. I'm gonna change the filter & clean the injectors to start with. Got my fingers crossed that it's not the pump.

Any ideas or suggestions?

To add. My wife reports that the truck has been intermittently(sp) stalling on her while driving. She has to keep giving it gas to keep it going. It hasn't happened to me once so I can't tell what that is. Could problems be related to fuel pump relay? Just thinking of smaller less costly solutions first.

First thing I'd check and CLEAN would be the MAF sensor and air filter.

Next when was the last time the fuel filter was changed.

Last...if those two don't help...the IAC (Idle Air Control) may need changed (if you do a search you'll get LOTS of hits on IAC)...and then there is the TPS (which I recently learned that 2V's have a TPS (throttle position sensor))

These items are MUCH easier than a fuel pump!...although injector could be clogged...and your cleaning of them may help...

I'd bet your MAF sensor if you have NEVER cleaned it has some crud. Also the fuel filter may be in need of changing as well...

Good luck!
joe.

Thanks, I know the filter needs changing as I haven't done it. Put 25k on so far. Didn't think abt the MAF. IAC did cross my mind. I'll check into that as well.

I've got buddies that stay up your way.

Well, changed the air filter & cleaned MAF & IAC. Also did a Seafoam treatment. So far so good. Time will tell. Still have to change out the fuel filter which I have but too much snow out. Can't get my 350z out of the Garage so I'll wait til my next round of off days to change that.

After becoming a contortionist & laying across the engine bay it wasn't too bad a job. Had the darndest time getting the bolts out of the IAC. Two reasons, besides having to work from the back I took the hose off that crosses the IAC to discover that was a coolant hose. Lucky for me the truck wasn't hot or I'd been in the hospital this afternoon. After drying off & working in close quarters I got it done. Was much easier going back on due the fact I removed the hose connecting the IAC to the intake tube & had more room to work. About 1-1.5 hours off, 15 minutes on. At least if I end up having to replace it I'll know an easier way to get to it.

Thanks for the help & will report back if this doesn't cure it.

And yes, I did remember to top off the coolant.

Ex40,

Glad you got it done...hopefully it will cure your issues.

I just noticed you are from Gary...yeah...you're not that far at all...we camp at Indiana Dunes usually once per year...nice State Park...we usually take the train to Chi-Town from either Michigan City or Dunes station!

Not sure what our plans are this year for heading that way yet...do you ever camp at the dunes?...if so maybe we could hook up there sometime...

Let us know how the Ex works out too!!!

joe.

With all the natural resources in the area you'd think I may have taken advantage. Never been camping a day in my life. Maybe something to think about. The misses hates bugs though. Will post up on progress of the truck.

Decided to take the more economical route first & cleaned the IAC. I've had my share of throwing parts @ what I thought the problem could be to no avail. That was before I started checking forums. I'm a member on a forum for all 3 cars & 2 bikes.

To answer you question. I used some throttle body cleaner I already had on hand. Can probably use carb cleaner also, I think their serve the same function. I used MAF cleaner for the MAF of course. Just sprayed it on thoroughly. I've heard the MAF is easily damaged if you try a Q-tip or something.

I've got 66k miles on the truck, bought with 41k Aug '06. Haven't had any major issues other than maintenance items. Rotors, brakes, & shocks. Only thing out of the ordinary I had to replace rusted out rear break line. That was fun.

You may be correct. What I searched for & found here mentioned it as a possibility so I gave it a try. Even if it was MAF & air filter I've got a cleaned IAC as well.

So far so good. Seems to be running a lot smoother now. The super computer indicates gas mileage has increased. I'll keep an eye on that & do my own calculations to verify. When I can get in my garage I'll change out the fuel filter which I bought today with everything else.

I'll be monitoring what's going on.

Next. Tires, alignment, & trans flush withing the next month.
