On my 1978 F350 with the 460 motor I am having a problem with the gas disappearing in the fuel line when the truck hasn't been run in 2 or more days. It will fire right up and run great if I toss an ounce or so of gas into the carb. I have noticed that there is no fuel left in the clear glass fuel filter after it has sat a couple of days. Also when the engine is running there is very little gas in the filter, and the line going into the filter will shoot only a couple of drops of gas into the filter, stop, then shoot a few more drops into it. I was thinking it might be a bad fuel pump, then again I don't know how a bad fuel pump could have anything to do with gas leaving the filter once it gets there......any ideas?......Thanks,
Pat.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Aug-02 AT 11:27 AM (EST)]I had the same question and never could figure out the problem. I just waited till the fuel pump quit and mounted an electric pump on the fraim rail. Now i can leave the truck sit for weeks and the fuel never drains back into the tank.
Also try to locate an inline fuel filter with a check valve. thatway it will not alow the fuel to leak back.
I have seen the intermittent fuel flow into a clear filter several times, maybe it is due to the low engine speed while cranking. One Ton, what kind of electric pump did you use and how much? I have a 302 that will sit for long periods of time. Was always hard to get started until I put a manual choke on it. Now it will start in a few seconds. The difference was amazing.
Sounds like the check valve in the pump has gone bad. I would replace the pump. Also, just to be safe, make sure that there is no gas in the oil, sometimes a bad diaphram will leak into the oil and not out the pee hole.
