I have a 93 Bronco. My problem starts like this. Push 4 wheel button and the 4X4 light come on, but does not go into 4 wheeldrive. I stop the vehicle and put it into neutral and push the low button and in goes into 4 wheel low. I push the low button again and it goes into 4 high.<O</O
<O</O
There is a gray box under the passenger toe kick that clicks several times when the buttons are pushed. I've also noticed a similar clicking when the intermittent windshield wipers are turned on. The wiper have not work right for years and I wondered if the same box worked both?
<O</O
What is the gray box called and do you think it is the problem?
With the electric motor working by putting it into 4 wheel low does that mean there is nothing wrong with the electric motor? <O</O
<O</O
Ford wants some ridiculous amount of money for the little gray box. What do you think of getting one at a wrecking yard and what would be a good price?
Thank you for any help you can give me.

I took it to a front end shop. The mechanic said the auto hubs were working. He told me the most likely problem was in the electic motor, but someone on the forum said if it was going into 4 low, than it was probablly not the electric motor.
The way I check it is to turn the steering wheel all the way to the lock while moving slowly and feel for the bouncing steering wheel. On rare occation it will go directly into 4 hi. Seems to work better when the vehicle is warmed up.
This is a street vehicle and rarely goes into 4 wheel, but I tried to remember to put it into 4 wheel a few times a year to keep thing working. So do you know if that gray box controls the wipers?
I put the words "push button 4 wheel drive" in the search and got lots of new info. It's probably that stupid motor. I tried the test on the electronic box. The light stayed on, but I don't know if I unplugged the right wires. I hate electrical problems.
I don't know how long the 4X4 wasn't working. When I push the 4X4 button the light comes on. I found out one day when I was screwing around and went flying into some deep snow and thought I'd just power on though it and got stuck. I got lucky and was able to just back out. We don't get a lot of snow around here, so I could go a few years without needing 4X4. Now I'm afraid to take it out in bad weather and I can't let my wife drive in bad weather. Now I own a Jeep, but it's not a comfortable.
Transfer case motors are about 125 at the parts store and are easy to put in. only 3 bolts hold it on the transfer case. now some wiring my need to be transfered
i'd just replace all that crap with a manual case from the junk yard and manual hubs. I love ford, but the push button 4x4 stuff is a load of bs. its more of a headache than it's worth. if you dont want to have to get out, you can leave the auto hubs on........til they quit to
