Harbor Freight Farmers Jack

Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they any good? I've been looking for a hi lift jack and I saw this in their flyer..

Three BIG things to consider.

1) Harbor Freight sells one -> two time use equipment. It's cheap because it's meant to get the job done once when you know you probably won't be doing it again and don't want to pay top dollar for top notch tools that will collect dust when you're done. The tools are often made out of the lowest grade metals to keep costs down.

2) If you're needing a high lift/farmer jack, you're probably already in a tight spot. You're going to want quality to get you out of there and something that's not going to leave you (or your family, if you have one) stranded.

3) High lift jacks are incredibly dangerous and have killed many people who either did not use them right or had the jack fail on them. Imagine a weight bearing pin in the jack going out and you have the weight of your vehicle causing that three foot handle to swing around and crack you in the skull.

When it comes to those things, it's worth the $20 - $30 extra to get one that you can put your life in it's hands.

I work in the natural gas field and twenty years ago almost every company truck came with one of these as an extra jack. There use is unlimited. Just be very careful when using this kind of Jack. Around this part of the country they had the nickname of "Widowmaker".

I completely agree, no serious off-road or farm truck should be without one. You just need to make sure you give it the utmost respect and get one that's built well.

Any opinions on the Summit jack?

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D907005&N=70 0+400304+115&autoview=sku

Also, when you use one of these on a Bronco, do you lift with the bumper? Do you need any accesories?

That definitely looks more along the right lines as far as strength. Although, is there no where local that you can get one? I bought one locally at a farm supply store for about $55, I imagine with shipping (didn't look at what it was) with one of those things, it's going to get even more expensive.

As for the bumper on the Bronco, it really depends on how pretty you want to keep it. If you don't care, the bumper will work just great. I had mine in mud down to the frame and had to lift it up a couple feet with one of those. It worked great but I still have some good chew marks on the bumper. If you don't want that, just get some heavy duty rubber strips to put between the metals.

I have to post on the quality of HFT tools. I've shopped with them for about 15 years now and there's definitely some throw away tools, but they also have some very good tools. I've got several shop tools that have really done well over the years. Like shopping anywhere, you have to take an objective look at what you're buying.

I used the store locator in your kink. There is actually a store about 15 minutes from my house (Mount Airy, MD). I think I'll stop by and see what they've got. As was stated, with shipping costs I would probably do better picking one up locally.

As for HF, I shop there all the time and have picked up some good tools that have lasted. My ball joint kit has served me well. I think I'll check take 80351's advice and check out the tractor supply store in this case...

You guys are great, thanks for the input...

I didn't see there was one in Mt Airy. Thats probably closer than York. We have a few friends with Liberty's that bought the one at TSC and I do understand it's not as heavy as a Bronco though.

Even the big name brand one needs to have the pins replaced every now and then
do any of the other brands even offer the rebuild kit? If not I would leave it be since the quality of those pins are really what your life is hinged on if they have a small
defect or they are made of something less than what is spec ( the great MIChina switcheroo) you run the risk of it failing. Caveat emptor at least with Hi Lift you know
they will be around to sue if it does have a catastrophic failure when you are using it
within it's design limits, Try suing china!!
