I have a recently rebuilt flathead (8BA) in a '49 F1. The thermostats are 180 degrees. I have a electric fan controlled by a 180 degree thermo switch. Once the engine reaches 180 the fan comes on and the temp drops to 170 and stays there. I think this is too low. What is the optimum temp. for a flathead? To raise the temp I can install a fan switch that closes at a higher temp or change the thermostats.

Thanks. I will replace the fan switch. Also, you helped me in the past try to solve my oil pressure problems. The problem was easily solved. I was running an oil filter plumbed just the way the original Ford system was set up except I was using a Fram PH8. It did not provide enough restriction. I plugged the galley from the block and now have 50 PSI at idle at 170 degrees. I also copied your PCV valve set up using a Toyotoa PCV valve. Once I learn how to add photos to these postings I'll send you a picture.
Thanks again for the ideas.

The switch is not adjustable. Stamped 180 on the body. I have to drain the coolant anyway as I'm replaceing the temp gauge with an Autometer. I'll make both changes at once.
PCV...Yes. It was originally a compression plug I got from Flathead Jack to plug the road tube hole. I stripped compression hardware and had to bore it a little. The valve fits very tightly.
Did you mount the Efan to the stock radiator? I am planning on running one but haven't looked into the radiator size or fan size yet. Also what size fan did you use?
Yes. I mounted it directly on the stock radiator. I bought it through Sacramento Vintage Ford. The fan is mounted in molded plastic. It was made by Cooling Components. It was an easy install.
