looking for a 429
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Dec-01 AT 11:02 PM (EST)]The 429 V-8 was offered from 1968-1973.The first vehicle to get the 429 was the Thunderbird in '68.In 1969,the 429 2-V,and 429 4-V engines were offered in fullsize Fords and Mercurys. In 1968,no 2bbl version had been available. For 1970,there were three versions of the 429 4-V offered in the Torino, and Montego lines. The 360hp 429 "Thunderjet" was considered the base high performance 429,while the 429 CJ&429 SCJ versions were optional in these cars.A 429 PI version was offered from '71-'73,for fullsize Fords&Mercs for law enforcment duties. In 1972,the 429 got a lower 8:1 compression ratio, and went with SAE net horsepower&torque ratings.Horsepower ratings for the '72-'73 429-4V(with the exception of the PI versions) were between 201-208 net horsepower. These 429s were found in '72&"'73: Gran Torinos,Merc Montegos, and both fullsize Fords&Mercs. The 429PI also was last offered in cars in 1973.Ford put the 429 4-V into F-600/F700/F-800 medium duty trucks up until the early 1990s.They added EFI to the 429 truck engine in the early '90s.The EFI429's highest horsepower rating was 236 net.The 429 ceased production in 1997.Hope this helps.

looking for a 429
You know I forgot about the best 429 of all....the BOSS429 in the '69-'70 Mustang. These were basically detuned NASCAR engines shoehorned into a couple hundred Mustangs over those two years....really expensive, and not the best choice for a heavy truck, anyway. And I also forgot to mention that in 1971-for that year only-the Mustang got an optional 429CJ&429SCJ engines. That sounds like an interesting combination until you realize Ford made the ponycar BIG to accept the 429.Basically a midsize Torino for '71& a Mustang for '71 weighed about the same with the big 429 on board.Performance was probably close between the two cars.Any of the high performance 429s will be expensive. The cost effective way to go would be a later year 429,and build it for more horsepower&some serious torque.Either that,or get a 460 to build-up.A lot of cars&trucks had the 460.These are easier to find than a 429.Well,unless you get one from a late-model,medium-duty truck.Happy Holidays.:-X12
